Warner Bros., Atlas Entertainment, DC Comics,

Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter, Gal Gadot, Scoot McNairy, Michael Shannon

After his struggle against General Zod, Metropolis has been destroyed. Superman (Henry Cavill) is the most dangerous figure in the world. Some people still view him as good and a savior of mankind, but the rest think maybe he is a threat to humanity as he is like a god and answers to no one, not the military, not the government, just his own will. Bruce Wayne the Batman (Ben Affleck) thinks, Superman is a danger to the world because he has so much power and is not controllable. The rivalry between them is furious, unknowingly fed by Lex Luthor who eggs them on to war. Lex has a secret weapon and its an awesome monster of greater power than both Superman and Batman combined, unleashing it after his plan to have them destroy each other is complete.

This film was met with both undying love, and intense hate. I think the main fuel for the haters is simply Ben Affleck as Batman. I don’t think this is fair, as I think he did a pretty awesome job, but Batman is not a very nice guy in this movie which certainly cripples Ben’s ability to play him properly. I, not surprisingly, find myself in the middle somewhere. Am I glad I went out to see it with my grandson in 3D on the big screen? Certainly! Did I fall asleep in the middle of it? Well, the seats reclined and were very comfy, and for a good while the action died down to a crawl as we tried to spend time listening to the dialog and watch the script try to rationalize why Batman and Superman hated each other. I wasn’t the only one who fell asleep for a while. But the effects were awesome, the 3D was awesome, and that final battle and the surprise character to arrives in the nick of time was awesome! All kidding aside, this film was better than ok, and I’m certainly glad to see it, but I was not blown away by this movie. Although I have never been a big fan of superhero movies anyway, and typically Batman and Superman and the like leave me yawning. This is the same. The final ending surprised me. I hadn’t heard it and I didn’t expect it. But I don’t really believe it, either. We’ll see. You have to watch this, even if it’s on DVD, because it’s going to be part of pop culture for years to come. So you might as well do it and get it over with. It’s not bad at all.

Pixar Animation Studios, Walt Disney Pictures,

Amy Poehler, Diane Lane, Kyle MacLachlan, Bill Hader, Mindy Kaling, Phyllis Smith, Lewis Black, Kaitlyn Dias

Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) was born in Minnesota. From the moment she was born, the emotions in her head controlled her actions. In the beginning it was really easy. Mostly Joy (Amy Pohler) ran things as she was a happy baby, but occasionally Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Bill Hader), and Disgust (Mindy Kaling) would take their turns at the controls. Another major task of the emotions was to keep the memories safe, and to transfer them to long term memory at night when Riley slept. But as she grew older, and the family moved to San Francisco, bad things happened and Joy and Sadness were locked outside the control room and they had to work long and hard to try to get back to the control room to prevent something awful from happening to Riley in this animated Pixar feature.

It’s interesting that this film is rated PG, as it’s not a kids film. But the kids will love it, just the same. The meaning of all the goings on here require a lot of life experience to understand, but the colors are bright, the characters are all fun, and the fact that the kids cannot understand the nuances here won’t make any difference. This means that for the grown ups, this film will be very enjoyable as the concepts are complex and little things will remind you of your childhood experiences with an adults understanding of what was going on. But it’s a great film for the kids to enjoy as well. Then 10 or 15 years from now they’ll run across it again, and have a whole new experience seeing how complex this film really is. The price of admission is worth it, just for the short feature “Lava” at the very beginning. Pixar always starts us off with a very good cartoon. This one is a Hawaiian legend put to song that is really good. The movie itself is also very good for all ages, and this is a shoe in for the best animated film of 2015. Pixar has another winner. If you can still get a chance to see this in the theater, it’s certainly well worth it, but if you miss it, be sure to catch it as soon as the DVD is released. This is a MUST SEE movie.

Warner Bros., Legendary Pictures, Syncopy,

Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Christopher Meloni, Laurence Fishburne

The usual….Planet Krypton is in trouble and about to be destroyed, and Jor-El (Russell Crowe) must ship his son to Earth to preserve the race. Grown up, reporter Clark Kent (Henry Cavill) is faced with members of his own race trying to destroy earth. So as his alter ego, Superman, he fights back with the biggest challenge of his life.

Now you want to talk about a movie that did NOT need to be made? This movie adds nothing to the story, and is far weaker than the other movies. I am really not sure what is the motive behind the decision to make this inferior version of the story. This movie is just plain boring. I felt really disappointed as there was no meat to this story at all. There is no real personality to either Clark Kent or Superman, and it seems to get bogged down on trivial matters relating to the politics of Krypton and very little about the star of the film himself. All in all, this reboot of Superman is a bust and is very disappointing. Some have suggested it’s the worst film of 2013. If it’s not, it’s pretty high up there on the list. I see the list of potential Raspberry Award nominees is making it’s round, and though After Earth has a lot of traction and will probably sweep the Razzies, this is actually a much worse film than After Earth, and Superman here is a much worse actor than Will Smith’s kid if you can believe that. This is a waste of time and money, and one of the few I say to avoid at all costs!
