K. JAM Media, Persistent Entertainment, Vocal Yokels,

Jessica Biel, Jake Gyllenhaal, Catherine Keener, James Marsden, Tracy Morgan, James Brolin

Alice Eckle (Jessica Biel) is a waitress in a small town. She is dating a policeman Scott (James Marsden) who has decided to propose to her. But a freak accident leaves her with a nail embedded in her skull inbedded into the brain. When she arrives at the hospital for emergency surgery, once the doctor (Bill Hader) learns she has no insurance, he throws her out. Alice sees a commercial for a junior senator, Howard Birdwell (Jake Gyllenhaal), so she heads off to Washington with the idea for a new bill to provide emergency health care for anyone who does not have insurance. But life in the Capitol is not at all what she expected, and she finds some very interesting effects of having a nail in your brain. Things get very complicated right very soon.

This is a movie that has bubbling in my queue for a couple years. I finally got enough “Very Long Wait(s) in front of it that it popped up in my mailbox. This is a light and funny film, with lots of decent characters. WIth the likes of Beverly D’angelo, Kirstie Alley, Tracy Morgan, and more, there’s plenty of funny stuff going on. This is a really weird movie as it’s really a morality play about the government and the dirty tricks, lies, and schemes that go on. There are some problems that held this movie back. A lot of it is a little silly. Well maybe I’d say a lot silly. A bunch of the jokes fall pretty flat, and many of the characters seem to be cardboard cutouts. I was entertaining, but not all that enticing. I wasn’t blown away with it, and I have a really hard time recommending this movie, but if you’re so inclined, it does a few decent moments, as long as you have nothing better to do.

** Christmas With Tucker

Muse Entertainment Enterprises,

James Brolin, Josie Bissett, Gage Munroe

George (Gage Munroe) is a little boy who lives with his grandparents, Bo (James Brolin) and Jill (Josie Bissett), because he recently lost his father and is dealing with his loss. After a neighbor asks him to watch over his dog, Tucker, George builds a strong bond with the dog. When the man returns, George is heartbroken to give Tucker back to his owner, and sets out to buy the dog, but the neighbor does not want to sell. But his personal issues make it seem like Tucker would be better off with George. George has to deal with another loss as he learns life is rough some times, but character is important.

This very heartwarming story is really full of old fashioned moral values. The story reminds me a lot of Lassie in a way, where the dog is smart and able to rescue Timmy from the well. In this case Tucker rescues George from a fall from a tractor while trying to plow snow. But this really shows the results of bad choices, the importance of forgiveness, and the virtues of honesty and truth. But it also shows the love of a dog toward it’s owner, and is a sure hit for dog lovers out there. Tucker steals the show, for sure. All in all, this is a really nice little Christmas film. I truly enjoyed the story. James Brolin is a wise and kind grandpa here, as Gage Munroe sure did a good job as a really nice kid trying to do the right thing. This is a good film for kids, as they will learn a lot from the values of the story, but really like the boy/dog part of the story as well. It’s got excitement and adventure, and is really well told. This is the kind of childhood we all wish we could have had. This is a very nice new Christmas story for 2013 and available from Hallmark all through the season.

Ava (Mandy Moore) is a marriage councilor. Things are going smoothly when suddenly her parents announce that Mom (Jane Seymour) wants a divorce, based upon an affair Dad (James Brolin) has 20 years ago. Now Dad is embracing his Jewish side, and Mom wants to travel the world. But Ava feels the need to bring them back together while her own marriage is struggling due to the stresses of trying to deal with her parents. Suddenly everything she believes in is falling apart, and she’s got to question whether she’s been a Pollyanna all along and life and love really does suck!

This is a cute little romantic comedy with a lot of great actors. It’s a small film, and available as a streaming film from Netflix and often available on cable or in a host of other ways. This looks like they certainly had a great deal of fun making this! This is like a big “Love Boat” episode, with lots of side stories and lots of great actors and actresses having a ball. It’s cute watching Ava’s most sincere plans go up in smoke. It’s not a heavy film, in the least. Just a simple rom-com with a good mix of both humor and romance. It’s like visiting old friends. Not a bad movie at all. There is a pretty surprising twist in the end. If you don’t see it coming, it’ll be worth the effort to watch it just for that! Hint: It takes place in the hospital. 🙂

Angel & Bear Productions, Capitol Motion Pictures, 8th Wonder Entertainment,

Brian Chandler (Kip Pardue) is an employee of a coffee company. His boss, Calvert Jenkins (James Brolin) sends him to Thailand to look for a great new brand of coffee, but for more than just a supplier, but to investigate the possibility of investing in the company and building a plant there. Brian is engaged, but finds himself attracted to the daughter of the family from the coffee plantation who is an executive in her own right, Ticha (Napakpapha Nakprasitte). But when Brian finds out his boss is not serious, and just playing with him, he has to re-evaluate his whole life.

This is a cute romantic film, about love and business. One of the greatest features of this film, is that it’s like a foreign film, and an American film all in one. All of the actors in Thai are locals, and much of the film is on location in Thailand. Much of the dialog is in the Thai language with English subtitles. So it give so much insight into life and love, and business in Thailand. And the scenery is beautiful. The actors are fresh and convincing, and it’s a really good little film. It’s interesting all the way through, and the relationships between everyone keeps the story moving forward, but the best part is the experience of being in such a strange land and what we learn from the culture there. This is one of those quirky films, way out of the mainstream, that was a pleasure to watch. Available as an instant download on NetFlix, it’s easy to access, and well worth the time enjoying this Bitter/Sweet story. Just watch for the title. The year is 2009 and there is a slash (/) between Bitter and Sweet. There are a lot of other titles that are very similar, so it’s hard to find the right one.

Four American friends stuck in low paying jobs decide it would be easy to make a commando-like raid into a Colombian drug lord’s compound and steal $5 million. They succeed rather easily in stealing the money, but soon run into trouble trying to get back out of the country, as both the drug dealer and a small army of bandits each hunt them down trying to get the money. The chase is on, big time!

High Risk is a very little known adventure story from 1981. The reason it’s so little known is not because it’s a bad movie. Actually it’s pretty good. It’s a B movie, sure, but it’s got great adventure and comedy. With all the stars in this film, it’s amazing it’s not known better than it is, but it only ran one week in the theater in 1981 because another action film premiered one week later and sort of blew it out of the water. The other film was a little thing called “Raiders of the Lost Ark”. As a result, almost no one has seen or heard of this film.

I was impressed with this film. I watched it on Netflix “Watch Instantly” and enjoyed it a lot. I expected sort of a TV Movie thing, but it was actually a good 80’s style adventure. Excellent acting and a strong story, it was impressive. Everyone did a good job, so it’s hard to single anyone out, but Anthony Quinn was great as the bandito leader just trying to get his share of the money. But really, everyone was good.

This is well worth watching on DVD or on Watch Instantly, and I recommend it if you like the 80’s style adventure stories like the Indiana Jones and Alan Quartermain and other films of the decade. This has a similar feel, and the fact that the robbers are just regular guys is an interesting twist, since they obviously are not prepared for what’s about to happen. Somehow they thought this would be easy, just walk in, take the money, and get out. It got complicated in a hurry. If you have a chance to track this one down, it’s worth it.
