Beth (Diane Keaton) is suffering from empty nest syndrome, and her doctor husband Joseph (Kevin Kline) is simply not much interested in her anymore. But driving home in the snow, her daughter notices something in the weeds on the side of the road. It turns out to be an injured dog which they nurse back to health, but after the wedding while daughter is on her honeymoon, the couple and some other friends take a vacation way up in the mountains where Freeway the dog becomes lost. They all set out to search for him, but he’s nowhere to be found, and the wedge between husband and wife is growing bigger. This is a film about a dog, but as you will see the real story is between a husband and wife who seem to have lost each other.

This is a beautiful story. The latter part of the story, up in the wilderness is extremely beautiful, and the scenery is breathtaking. It’s a fairly slow unwinding story, but the characters are fully developed bit by bit, and the lead roles are played perfectly. These are very good actors, and it’s a pleasure to get lost in the story and watch the relationship develop. All in all, this is a really nice movie, and a very well developed story. As I stated, the story is not really about Freeway the dog, but he does steal the show. This dog is also a very good actor.

I think this is a nice film for a rental, and well worth the time to watch. It has the feel of a Lifetime movie, with the budget of a Hollywood film. It’s very well done.

Poor Eric (Jason Sudekis). Eric has never worked a day in his life it seems. His dad is very rich, and they have a vacation home out in the Hamptons on Long Island. This place is awesome, and right near the beach. So every summer, at least every weekend, Eric and his gang of hanger-on friends party at the beach house. As we meet them, they are in the midst of a very inappropriate “White Trash” party. Eric meets a pretty faux pregnant girl Kelly (Leslie Bibb) who he promptly forgets. But she has a big surprise for him. Eric’s Dad is selling the house because he doesn’t use it much anymore, and Kelly is the Realtor. When Eric and his friends come to the realization that there’s nothing they can do to stop the sale, the decide to have one last Labor Day bash that will be positively EPIC! But what to do. After rejection the “Brown” party idea where everyone wears brown, and all the food is brown………(hunh?) they finally stumble upon a great idea. Since their generation was cheated out of sex by Aids and Herpes and tons of other scary things, they decide to hold “A Good Old-Fashioned Orgy” party. Most of the guys are into it, but he girls take a little longer to warm up to the idea. They do their homework, and preparations, and then the big party arrives. Will they have the courage to really do it? How does something like that get rolling? That’s what they have to figure out.

This film is really funny. In fact, much funnier than I expected. I also got the Unrated version from Netflix, so I can’t speak for the R version that was in theaters for a short time. The movie just didn’t catch on, and it’s a much nicer DVD release anyway. It’s definitely inappropriate, but that’s what it’s going for. This is low brow humor all the way. Like the Hangover films, and the American Pie films, this one tries to gross us out by getting to the lowest point it can. The jokes are really funny, and the characters are those that have enough substance that we really care about them and believe them.

It’s not a great film, and certainly not award winning cinema, but it’s good at what it tries to be. A dirty little time waster that goes a little too far all the time. These guys are friends, but like real friends, each of them has some issues. They gotta get through the issues first before they can really be close enough to pull this off. There are some really funny characters that it’s quite enjoyable to get to know a little bit. All the loony characters are here, and they’re all pretty likable. For some guilty pleasure fun time, go ahead and rent this if you’re not offended easily.

Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell, Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx, Julie Bowen, Donald Sutherland, Lindsay Sloane

Horrible Bosses is the story of three friends. Nick Hendricks (Jason Bateman) works for a big corporation run by Dave Harken (Kevin Spacey) who is a jerk of a boss who has been running Nick through the ringer for years for no purpose other than to degrade him. Kurt Buckman (Jason Sudeikis) works at a chemical plant for a gentle boss (played by Donald Sutherland) who promises him that someday he’ll run the company. But he quickly croaks, and his coke head idiot son, Bobby Pellitt (Colin Farrell) takes over the company and is destroying the company with his coke habit, hookers, and lack of any redeeming value at all. Finally Dale Arbus (Charlie Day) works for the boss from hell, dentist Dr. Julia Harris D.D.S. (Jennifer Aniston) who is a sex crazed, blackmailing pervert of a boss who won’t stop harassing him even though he’s engaged. The three of the hate their jobs and their bosses, so they dream up a plan to hire a hit man (Jamie Fox) to kill all three of their bosses. Naturally everything goes downhill from there, and anything that can go wrong, does go wrong in this laugh fest from start to finish.

This truly is one of the funniest films I’ve seen in a very long time. I laughed from start to finish in this thing. It was hysterical. The jokes are rapid fire, and the characters are wonderful. The bad guys are real jerks, and the 3 friends have the perfect chemistry. One is the straight man, afraid of doing the wrong things, scared not to toe the line, but talked into things that are spinning out of control by his funny sex crazed friend who is willing to try everything but can’t keep his mind off the ladies, to the third guy who is just plain nuts. Every character is perfectly developed and very, very funny. This film has a great collection of stars who had a riot filming this thing, as shown by the bloopers and outtakes in the closing credits. It was total fun, and just about the closest I’ve had to a 5 Star Comedy in a long time. This one is really good. It’s a bit crude, as most modern comedies are, but nothing in extreme bad taste, and it comes off as a real good comedy.
