Melissa (Naomi Watts) and Richie (Matt Dillon) are a Florida couple living in squalor and barely making ends meet. Richie is a quadriplegic and is unemployed while Melissa has a minimum wage job working as a clerk in a mini-mart. They’re just scraping by when Melissa finds out she’s pregnant and things look like they are turning up. But Melissa loses her job and her ex Justin (Norman Reedus) is stalking her and things take a much bigger turn for the worse.
This is a disturbing and depressing film that has some good and some bad. On the good side, the cast is very good. Naomi Watts especially does a splendid job pulling this off. The problem is that it’s really a downer. This is one of those films that take a couple in trouble and just turn on the camera and let it run. There’s not a real point here, other than how pointless it is. Although I suppose it realistic that people in a situation like this are not likely going to get any better. I just tend to dislike movies that have no purpose and just don’t go anywhere. This one doesn’t. There isn’t any reason to hate this movie, but at the same time, there’s not much going for it either. It’s very ordinary. Pass this one by.

Noah Cordin (Nick Stahl) is a country sheriff in a small town who is called in to investigate the break in and murder of a small child. Upon investigation, all leads point to the small town where he was raised, so he has to go back home to investigate this crime. Everyone, it seems, is out to deceive him, and the town is looking out for it’s own.
This is a pretty good direct to video mystery crime thriller. There is no mystery about who the killer is, but the suspense part of this movie is the difficulty Noah has in getting people to talk, and to put the pieces together. The town wants a quick arrest and is pressuring Noah to arrest anyone, but he wants to simply find the truth. This is very much like a Hitchcock thriller where we know the killer, but everything in the investigation tries to lead him astray. It’s not a shoot-em-up car crash spectacle, but it’s a smart intelligent crime story, and quite a surprise as a direct to video film. The actors are not well known, but they are all pretty much up to the task, and it’s a decent film to watch. It’s worth tracking down if you’re able to find it.

American Film Company, The, Wildwood Enterprises
James McAvoy, Robin Wright, Evan Rachel Wood, Alexis Bledel, Justin Long, Danny Huston, Norman Reedus, Kevin Kline, Tom Wilkinson
Abraham Lincoln was shot, attempts were made on the Vice President and the Secretary of State. John Wilkes Booth was identified as the shooter, and he was captured and killed, but the public knew there was more than one person involved and wanted a trial. Booth and a number of other conspirators met at the boarding house of Mary Surratt (Robin Wright Penn) and her son in Washington. Mary’s son was nowhere to be found, but Mary was arrested under the suspicion that she was a participant in the plan. It was a military trial with no jury and the accused was not allowed to speak on her own behalf. The story is of young lawyer Frederick Aiken (James McAvoy) as he defends Mary Surratt.
Directed by Robert Redford, the American Film Company is bringing this, as the first, in a series of factual movies based on America History. This story is one that will haunt you. The story is told in unflinching truth, and from what I can tell is pretty historically accurate. It is a 2 hour labor of love to tell the story of this interesting gentleman and what happens to him when he is called upon to represent a damn rebel murderer. He comes to think that maybe she is innocent, but recognizes that she is not able to get a fair trial and he goes to elaborate lengths to try to convince the military tribunal that what they are doing is wrong. Through his efforts it was decided by the supreme court that american civilians must be tried in a public court and not in military tribunals.
Excellent cinematography and beautiful period Washington D.C. in the 1860’s. The film is rich and vibrant, but also very touching and very, very interesting from start to end. I am really glad I got to see this film, and we all enjoyed watching it very much. I highly recommend this film for all ages, except maybe very small children.
