Kyla (Letoya Luckett) meets Amir (Cleo Anthony)and the hit things off right away. Amir runs a club with his Mom (Gladys Knight) and Pop (Richard Portnow). Things are going great when suddenly Amir’s father passes away which throws him for a loop. Around the same time Kyla’s ex shows up and is willing to do anything to get her back again. Suddenly Kyla and Amir find themselves living separate lives and both are dreadfully unhappy. Can they work through their issues and find real happiness.

Though this is advertised as a Christmas film, it isn’t really. It starts at Christmas and it finishes at Christmas a year later, but we get a look at all the seasons. It’s a pretty decent little movie with some interesting characters. It was especially nice to see Gladys Knight. She did a great job, and was a pleasure to watch. The romance element, of course, is the key to the movie, but there are lots of other problems and emotions. We’re put through the wringer with some heartfelt tragedies here. Things wrap up nicely and we’re back to a festive holiday season again. I thought this film was nicely put together, and was enjoyable to watch. It was nice to see a good romance story done with the mostly African-American cast. Many films like this fall into the silly slapstick trap, or else go to the urban ghetto tragedy stuff. This is a mainstream story with understandable problems and trials that are familiar to all people, regardless of their ethnic origin or background. It was a good story and the skin colors of the different actors made no difference at all either way. I thought this was really handled nicely.

Arkin (Josh Stewart) is held captive by an evil madman known as the Collector. He somehow manages to escape and is free of the house of horrors when he is kidnapped in the hospital by mercenaries hired by Elena’s (Emma Fitzpatrick) wealthy father who is paying them to rescue his daughter who is also being kept for “The Collection”. So Arkin has to go back into the house of horror and risk his life again to try to save Elena or die trying.

This movie is really gory and violent, and very bloody. It’s also pretty silly and a direct derivative of the Saw franchise. It’s nearly identical. The same premise of killing people in extremely gruesome manners that are highly technical and very unique is what Saw is all about. This movie is the exact same thing. But it’s not that scary, and really not worth the effort. If you’re a fan of the Saw series, there are so many of them, you might as well watch one of the originals. I just didn’t think this film was worth the time I spent watching it.

The Tyler Perry Company

Loretta Devine, Tyler Perry, Bow Wow, David Mann, Cassi Davis, Tamela Mann, Lauren London, Isaiah Mustafa, Rodney Perry, Shannon Kane

Madea (Tyler Perry) learns about her niece Shirley’s (Loretta Divine) health issues, the super-grandma and problem-solver takes over the situation again, On Shirley’s behalf, summoning together her highly fragmented clan in this madcap dramatic comedy all about family values. Shirley wants to have a nice dinner at home to break the sad news to the family, but nothing goes as expected. When it all falls apart, it falls upon Madea, as usual, to crack some skulls and put everybody back on the right track. This, she does, with a great deal of enthusiasm.

Oh, my. I can hardly figure out where to begin to review this film. It’s got great family values, as I said, and teaches good life lessons. It also has some humor, especially African-American humor that is pretty clever. Whether it’s Perry or Martin Lawrence or Eddie Murphy dressing up in drag and playing a snappy old woman in a fat suit, it’s sure to be somewhat funny. It’s hard to criticize a film that has such good values and such a nice lesson, but can the world handle ANOTHER Tyler Perry movie? It seems we’ve seen it over and over and over again.

Let me say this. If you haven’t seen Tyler Perry’s Madea dozens of times, and you’d like to know what it’s all about, this is a great way to start. It’s a decent film, and there is even a stage play version of the same film available on DVD which would be OK as well. But if you’re sick of Madea, this is just more of the same. Personally I thought long and hard about skipping this installment of the Madea slaps a bunch of bratty kids around movie, but I thought maybe there was something different here. But there wasn’t. A few days ago I did a review of I Will Follow. [CLICK HERE TO SEE THE REVIEW] This is a much better telling of a similar story that is not exactly the same as what we’ve seen over and over. I would recommend that one over this one (although it’s more drama and less slapstick). If you haven’t overdone it with Madea though, then by all means go for it, as it’s a decent film. I’ve just been overdosed on Fat Lady, Man in Drag, movies for a long time. (Hint: The final Maury Povich segment is particularly funny though, I must admit.)
