Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), Henson Associates (HA)

Frank Oz, Dave Goelz, Eren Ozker, Jerry Nelson, Marilyn Sokol, Richard Hunt

Ma Otter and son Emmet are poor as dirt. Father Otter has passed on, leaving little but bills. Ma does laundry, and Emmet does odd jobs to make ends meet, but when Ma wants to give Emmet a pearl inlaid guitar for Christmas, his hear’s desire, and Emmet wanted to give Ma a piano to make up for the one she had to hock to buy food, they both found out about a town talent show with a $50.00 prize and decided to join.

This movie debuted on HBO back in 1977. I have been looking for it ever since. When Jim Henson was thinking of producing the Muppet movie, it was questionable whether or not they had the capability to do a full length film with all the technical issues in handling the Muppet characters. They found this darling storybook and made it into the 50 minute special shown here. It was so wonderful, that they knew they were ready for the Muppet Movie which was one of the best films ever. I don’t know whether this story was influenced by O Henry’s “The Gift of the Magi” or not, but it’s the same kind of story, where each gives up a most valuable possession in order to give a gift to the other. This was around the same time as when Fraggle Rock was on HBO, and this is very similar in a way. Fraggle Rock was a wonderful series, but this film has all the heart and love, and Christmas spirit you could ask for. It’s fabulous for kids, but I know adults are going to love it as well, and the good news is that it is available on “Watch Instantly” on NetFlix, and for sale on Amazon. I want to own this one, and keep it in my Christmas Film collection forever. I really love this special little film.

Paramount Pictures

Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, Vera-Ellen, Dean Jagger, Mary Wickes, John Brascia, Anne Whitfield, George Chakiris

Corporal Bob Wallace (Bing Crosby) and Private Phil Davis (Danny Kaye) are fighting in WWII in 1944 in Europe on the front lines. It’s Christmas Eve and they are putting on a show. A bomb drops and a wall caves and Phil saves Bob’s life, so as soon as the war is over, he uses that fact against him to urge him into working in show business together. Wallace and Davis turns into a multi-year Broadway hit. As the holidays arrive, they, as a favor to an old friend stop by a small club to see the Haynes Sisters (Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellen) and before you know it they’re off on a vacation trip to Vermont. Unfortunately there is no White Christmas in Vermont, and it turns out that the lodge was owned (and in financial trouble) by their old Major General Waverly (Dean Jagger). So the boys decide to bring their whole TV show to Vermont for a live Christmas Eve broadcast to help out their old commanding officer.

This is one of the most beloved of all Christmas movies. As the very first film shot in VistaVision, it was a beautiful and colorful spectacle in 1954, but the song and dance format certainly hold up through the years. Great music, great scenery, and a wonderful cast. The song White Christmas was not written for this movie. Irving Berlin wrote it for Holiday Inn in 1942. But the film was so popular, that this film was made to use the song and the title. The story is that Irving Berlin thought the song would never make it and wanted to cut it from Holiday Inn. He felt the song “Mr. Lincoln” was sure to be a smash hit.

There are so many stories and legends about the movie that it has filled up books. But all that isn’t important in the least. This is just one that you switch on and enjoy on a Christmas Afternoon or Evening and just relax and get into the spirit. If this doesn’t do it, nothing will. One of the top 3 or 4 Christmas films of all times!!!

Revolution Studios, 1492 Pictures, Skipping Christmas

Tim Allen, Jamie Lee Curtis, Dan Aykroyd, M. Emmet Walsh, Elizabeth Franz, Erik Per Sullivan, Cheech Marin, Jake Busey, Austin Pendleton, Tom Poston, Julie Gonzalo, Rene Lavan, Caroline Rhea, Felicity Huffman

Luther Krank (Tim Allen) is sick of the commercialism of Christmas. Nora (Jamie Lee Curtis) his wife decide with Luther to just skip the holidays. No tree, no ornaments, and most of all, no rooftop light up Frosty. They’re even going to cancel their annual neighborhood Christmas Eve Party. Their daughter is away, and they have a chance to just skip it, and head out on Christmas Day for a cruise. But the neighbors are worried about their lack of Christmas spirit and try to force them to shape up and put up the Frosty! But when their daughter decides she’s coming home and bringing her brand new fiance to meet the family and celebrate the holidays, they are forced to somehow put together a Christmas with almost no time, and the stores are empty. Fortunately, the neighbors get into the mood and try to help put together a last minute Christmas for Blair (Julie Gonzalo).

This is a very funny film. It was a big mainstream film back in 2004 and is shown every Christmas. Tim Allen is at his funniest in this film, and Dan Aykroyd is hysterical as his neighbor. The whole bunch is really good. Luther has an epiphany finally, and realizes what it’s all about, and makes one of the grandest gestures ever. It’s a heartwarming moment, and in the middle of this very funny comedy, there is a bit of true heart. It’s a really good Christmas film, and one I highly recommend!

Walt Disney Pictures, Mandeville Films, Kyra Productions

Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Jessica Biel, Adam LaVorgna, Gary Cole, Eve Gordon, Lauren Maltby, Andrew Lauer, Sean O’Bryan, Lesley Boone

Jake (Johathan Taylor Thomas) is attending college in California with his girlfriend Allie (Jessica Biel). Jake has plans to change the plane ticket his father sent him for 2 tickets to Cabo San Lucas for Christmas. But Dad has other plans and wants him home. Allie doesn’t want to go either. Dad makes Jake a deal that he can’t refuse. If he is home by the time the family sits down to dinner on Christmas Eve at 6PM, he gets a Porsche. But Jake is a bit of a wise guy, and some other kids dump him off in the desert out in the middle of nowhere dressed as Santa. Jake has to use everything in his power to try to get home or lose the Porsche. That will not be easy, as everything that can go wrong does. Jake does have to grow up a lot on this journey.

This film was made during the run of “Home Improvement” on TV. Jonathan was very popular with the teens, and this was an attempt to bring him onto the big screen. One odd thing in this film is that Jonathan is paired with Jessica Biel as his girlfriend. Actually Jessica is a year younger than Jonathan, but he looks so young, and she looks so mature, that she could almost pass as his mother. It’s weird that the two are paired together. It’s probably because there’s no way Jonathan looks like a college kid. But putting that aside, the journey from California is wrought with a ton of problems that have to be resolved. Like “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles” this is a journey where there are a lot of obstacles, but in this case most of the setbacks are learning experiences for Jake who grows a lot during the trip. This is a funny movie, and very light and enjoyable, especially for the younger crowd. I bet many young people today have never seen this film, and will enjoy it if they get a chance to see it. I’m glad Disney decided to bring this film back as part of ABC Family’s 25 Days of Christmas. It’s a funny Christmas distraction, and I enjoyed it very much. I had forgotten a lot of the gags, and it was nice to see it again after all these years.

Waterbury Films, Cinema Center Films

Albert Finney, Alec Guinness, Edith Evans, Kenneth More, Paddy Stone, Michael Medwin, Mary Peach, David Collings, Richard Beaumont

Ebenezer Scrooge is a miserable old miser who hates Christmas. He is only concerned with money and has no heart when it comes to his business dealings. His deceased partner Jacob Marley comes to visit him on Christmas Eve and promises three ghosts will visit to save his soul. Scrooge fights his way through the three ghostly visits and sees a new side of human kindness and a Merry Christmas. There have been many versions of A Christmas Carol, but this was the first to do a large scale musical version of the film.

Albert Finney does a wonderful job as Scrooge. He’s young enough to play the young Scrooge well, but through the magic of make-up can turn into old Scrooge just admirably. So with all the versions of A Christmas Carol to choose from, why this one? Well, I thought hard about that, and certainly the musical does make it very different than most. There are a few things that are changed from the story, mostly things that did not need to be changed, but I guess that is poetic license. (For example, Scrooge’s girlfriend Belle was NOT Fezziwig’s daughter), but for the most part, it is pretty faithful to Dicken’s words. Most of the songs are not real classics. It’s odd that the most memorable song of the film is the “Thank You Very Much” song sung to the recently departed Ebenezer Scrooge from those who owed him money. 🙂

This is a very worthy version of arguably the best Christmas story ever written. Certainly my collection of “Christmas Carol” was not complete until I saw this one. I enjoyed it very much, and felt the music added a lot to the story. It was not silly or light-hearted, it was very faithful to the story. All in all, it’s another Christmas classic, and very well done, for sure!
