Village Roadshow Pictures, Warner Bros., Weed Road Pictures,

Colin Farrell, Russell Crowe, Will Smith, Jennifer Connelly, Matt Bomer, William Hurt, Jessica Brown Findlay, Eva Marie Saint, Lucy Griffiths

Peter Lake (Colin Farrell) was an orphan child taken in by one of the servants of the devil and trained to be a master thief. When he breaks into to a rich Manhattan home to steal their goods, he suddenly finds he is not alone. The daughter, Beverly Penn (Jessica Brown Findlay) who is very ill is home alone. But when Peter lays eyes on her, he falls deeply for her and so begins the decade long love story of Peter and Beverly spanning generations.

This is a fairy tale story of good versus evil, magic and miracles, but most of all a love story. Epically spread over a hundred years or so, we get to watch this touching beautiful tale that really impressed me. With great actors in great roles, this is an epic love story that is sure to touch the heard of the darkest cynic. It’s well crafted, told slowly and unfolding piece by piece one step at a time. It will mislead you, break your heart, and bring tears to your eyes. Monumental storytelling at it’s finest, Colin Farrell is awesome. The relationship between Russell Crowe’s character and that of Will Smith will surprise you. This is an epic tale worthy of Princess Bride. This is simply a wonderful story, and one that I would really have hated to miss.

Canal+, Ciné+, EuropaCorp,

Scarlett Johansson, Morgan Freeman, Analeigh Tipton, Amr Waked

Lucy (Scarlett Johansson) is kind of a loose cannon. As the film starts she’s forced to deliver a briefcase with unknown contacts to a high power drug syndicate boss. But things go awry quickly as Lucy soon discovers it’s a substance that will enable you to grow in brain power and develop some amazing abilities. Professor Norman (Morgan Freeman) is a professor/scientist who has been studying brain power for years, so Lucy calls on him to explain what is happening to her and to find a way to save her.

I feel really bad calling this a science-fiction film. It’s not. It’s more like a fairy tale. The science in this film is flawed. It’s based on the fallacy that we only use 10% of our brain, and what might happen if we suddenly could use 100%. From there on, it’s pretty silly. The recent film that it sort of reminds me of is Johnny Depp’s “Trancendence”. But this has some things that the other doesn’t have. There is some real action sequences in this film. It was FUN to watch. There’s the obligatory Asian henchman bad guy with his gang of Kung Fu baddies. Lucy knows how to take care of herself though. Basically, this is simply fun. It’s like watching the X-Men or Spiderman or some other superhero movie, but Lucy is such an unlikely superhero. From the very beginning on, though, she takes on a roller-coaster ride. If you try to follow the scientific explanations, you’re going to hate this, so watch it as fantasy and enjoy the action packed, rip roaring action film. I have to admit, I find myself ashamed that I enjoyed this as much as I did. I know that most poeple may find it a little over the top, but I thought it was lots of fun. I’d say to just enjoy it for what it is, flaws and all.

Serendipity Point Films, XYZ Films, Citizen Jones,

Minnie Driver, Meat Loaf, Allie MacDonald, Douglas Smith, Kent Nolan

Kylie Swanson (Minnie Driver) was a huge stage star, but she was murdered during her big production. Her daughter, Camilla (Allie MacDonald) is working as a cook in a rather snooty acting camp and Kylie’s manager, Roger McCall (Meat Loaf) is running the camp and wants to perform the same musical that Camilla’s mother was killed performing. Camilla has a desire to be an actress like her mother and tries out for the lead role. But history is repeating itself as bodies begin to pile up.

This film did not really impress me. I can see a sort of Rocky Horror Show kind of feel, which I have also never been really fond of. Some of the songs from Rocky are classics, but…this one doesn’t have the hits that Rocky has. This is a genuine mix of musical and horror, but the problem I think is that this “fusion” business just doesn’t work. It’s not a good musical, and it’s not a good horror film. Either one could have been good if they had focused their efforts on one or the other. Meat Loaf’s performance was actually riveting most of the way. He played a character that was so different from himself that you could quickly forget that it was him. He did a great job playing the “The show must go on” director of this camp. There is some humor, and of course, every couple minutes the cast breaks into song to stop progression of the story. With lyrics like: “All of us have heard these names of hate, but let me get one thing straight: I’m gay, I’m gay, but not in that way / Musicals move me and touch me in ways I can’t say. / He’s gay, but not in that way. / I sleep with women but musicals make me feel gay! / I’m gay, I’m actually gay. I don’t get hard when I see T and A / Could be my DNA or how I was raised. / We don’t distinguish here at Center Stage. / We’re all gay, we’re gay in all …” it gives you an idea why the musical portion doesn’t work. I felt it actually hurt the horror portion making it much less intense as well. Basically it was a brave move to try to make a horror musical, but for the general public, I don’t think it’s going to work. There is a group of people who will love this, and to them I say, go for it, but for the rest of us, it’s just not good enough on either side. I would say to skip this one.

Horse Head Pictures, ITS Capital, Scorned llc,

Billy Zane, AnnaLynne McCord, Viva Bianca

Sadie (AnnaLynne McCord) has had a rough life, but she’s in love. She confides with her best friend, Jennifer (Viva Bianca) that she’s headed off on a romantic weekend with her boyfriend, Kevin (Billy Zane), where she’s sure he’s ready to propose to her. But once she gets there and thing start getting really hot, Sadie discovers that Kevin has been cheating on her with Jennifer which sends her into a psycho frenzy. She texts Jennifer on his phone to let her know Sadie is gone for good and the two of them are on for a hot weekend. What follows is a wild threesome with Kevin and Jennifer tied up and crazy insane Sadie ready to teach them what happens to best friends that cheat.

This horror/thriller is typical AnnaLynne McCord stuff that you would be likely to find on the Showtime After Dark series of titillating horror fests with not too much story. Not many of these make their way to DVD, but this film is quite a bit better than the usual type of this genre. They actually did put a lot of thought into the majestic kills and torture methods of this crazy lady, and the script is actually fairly interesting. It’s cleverly done, and the location is magnificent. I would love to have a chance to live in this house. But still, it’s just a cheese little revenge horror flick that doesn’t have any real message. This girl is flawed to begin with and has a long history of hysterics, so it seems natural that this put her over the edge. I don’t highly recommend this film, as there isn’t much really going on here, but I do admit that it was better than many in this genre, so if you like the low budget late night horror stuff, this is better than most, but not good enough for me to tell you to go out looking for it. It’s just not good enough for that.
