Company Films, Emmett/Furla Films, Fortitude International,

Keanu Reeves, Ana de Armas, Christopher McDonald, Big Daddy Kane, Mira Sorvino,

Detective Galban (Keanu Reeves) is a detective, a widower with a young child he just can’t seem to care for. He finds his partner dead deep in the subway and immediately sets out to find out who killed him. But the more he learn, the more it looks like his partner was not a very good cop, and was involved in a lot of dirty stuff. But his partner’s wife, Janine Cullen (Mira Sorvino) wants answers, yet the force wants Galban to leave it alone, as if more is found out about his partner’s past, it could deprive the wife and child of his pension. But everyone close to the case turns up dead, and he is led to a young devout Latina girl, Ana (Isabel De La Cruz) seems to have witnessed a miracle, and finding out what she knows may solve the case, but it could make her end up dead too.

This is a very strange little cop drama, and Keanu Reeves really did a decent job in this dark and depressing role. He’s fighting demons and it shows on the surface. The relationship between him and his partners wife is also intense, as not only is she dealing with the sudden loss of her husband, but at the same time dealing with the fact that he might not have been a very nice guy. Well, to complete the hat trick, Ana has her own past demons that she has shut out but need to come forward. Her husband is in Iraq and she is living with her husband’s Mother and sisters who are not very understanding of her situation either. This really is a dark story, and a bit depressing, but aside from that, it is a pretty good story. The characters are familiar, but very well developed. The acting is good, and it’s a pretty suspenseful movie. It borders on the supernatural, which makes it a very interesting film. It is R rated, and some of it is pretty intense, so definitely for mature audiences, but if you like a little different twist on a dead partner revenge story, this really isn’t half bad.

Cube Vision, Universal Pictures, Will Packer Productions,

Ice Cube, Kevin Hart, Olivia Munn, Ken Jeong, Benjamin Bratt, Tika Sumpter, Sherri Shepherd

Ben Barber (Kevin Hart) is about to get married to detective James Payton (Ice Cube)’s sister making them future Brother’s-in-law. But after Ben’s success in the last film, he is chomping at the bit to become a full fledged detective like his brother in law. But he’s just out of the police academy and not ready yet. When James has to take a road trip down to Miami to interview the technical nerd who has broken into the phone of a drug lord, he decides somewhat reluctantly to take Ben along simply to prove to him that he’s not detective material. Naturally things go awry, and the pair end up in a dangerous cat and mouse game with some real bad dudes.

With this sequel that starts immediately after the first film, you get exactly what you would expect. This is no pearl, but it is what it is. Kevin Hart is a pretty funny guy, and he knows how to make you laugh when he’s not annoying the crap out of you. Ice Cube is a really good, dry and serious, all business straight man, and then the story is just a vehicle to allow these guys to do what they do, and they do it very well. Trouble is we’ve seen this already, and it’s very similar to every other buddy cop movie where one is a bumbling but good-hearted Jerry Lewis guy who fouls everything up, and the other is a sometimes borderline mean, but always serious Dean Martin straight man. Like Abbott and Costello of the old days took half hour vaudeville routines and turned them into feature films, this vaudeville “standup act” is made into a movie as well. That’s not to say that it’s not a good story or even a good movie. But what you expect is what you get, and I can see how this would irritate the heck out of a lot of people. So I’m not giving it a glowing rush out and rent it rating, but I am saying if you find Cube and Hart a funny standup act, you’re bound to enjoy this film. So use wisdom in deciding whether to invest the hour and a half or not on this film, but if you like slap stick funny movies, by all means go for it.

LD Entertainment, Affirm Films, Columbia Pictures,

Joseph Fiennes, Tom Felton, Peter Firth, Cliff Curtis

This is the tale of Lucius (Joseph Fiennes) a ranking Roman Tribune who was present when Jesus was crucified on the mountain. He was a witness to the death and burial in a tomb of the body. Under orders from Pontius Pilate (Peter Firth) after the urging of Caiaphas (Stephen Greif), Lucius orders guards around the tomb for three days to assure the the followers of Christ do not manage to steal the body to make people believe he has risen from the dead as he promised. When the body is missing, Lucius sets out to find the followers and solve the mystery, but he is certainly not ready for what he is about to learn.

This is a good solid film that covers the story of what happened after the resurrection of Christ and the following days until the Ascension and beyond when no one knew what was really happening. It is a historical tale and a biblical story, but seems to very well done. The story isn’t preachy in the least, and seems to feel much more like a documentary based on Lucius’ point of view. There are some outstanding characters. Kudos to Stewart Scudamore as Peter, who does a magnificent job. In fact, all of the characters are very good. The story is solid, somewhat “Hollywood-ized” at that, but still a very solid film. This is a film that could be enjoyed as a Roman historical drama without the buying into the religious overtones at all, but this was really made for the Christian believer who would enjoy the events following the crucifixion up through the Ascension. The cinematography is excellent, and the feel of the Holy Lands is very real. This is a wonderful story and this is a film that you might want to see, just for the experience that it gives you. I highly recommend this film for families and people of all ages.

Bigscope Films, Altitude Film Entertainment, Out of Africa Entertainment,

Joe Reegan, Rick Ravanello, Matthew Holmes, Reiley McClendon, Scott E. Miller

This is the story of Outpost 39, filled with soldiers who have been fighting an invasion of aliens set on taking control of Earth. The story is told in flashback as the soldiers of Outpost 39 are interviewed to find out what happened as the tell a tale of horror, terror, and some giant puzzles to figure out as the leaders try to get to the bottom of what happened. This is a thrilling mixture or war and science fiction that is the story of a huge military effort against the aliens.

This was a surprising little film. This starts out as a military report, but as time passes we gradually learn that the Earth has changed since the invasion of an alien species. I could not imagine how a typical war movie filled with military actions and activity could turn out to be a decent sci-fi film as well, but this strange little movie manages to do it both very well. It’s a unique little concept of a film. The acting is surprisingly good without any really big stars. The action and battles are very well filmed, and the fighting is hot and heavy. Piece by piece, interview by interview, we learn the truth about what has been happening and as the leaders put together the story, we learn it along with them. It’s an interesting and amazing little piece of film making, and well worth streaming if you enjoy War, Sci-Fi, or both!
