3DTK, EuropaCorp, Feelgood Entertainment,

Kevin Costner, Amber Heard, Hailee Steinfeld, Connie Nielsen, Tómas Lemarquis , Richard Sammel, Marc Andreoni, Bruno Ricci, Jonas Bloquet, Eriq Ebouaney

Ethan Renner (Kevin Costner) is an aging CIA field agent who is just finding out he is dying of cancer. He returns home to Paris to try to reconnect with his estranged daughter, Zoey (Hailee Steinfield). Zoey has no desire to make up with the man who never was a father to her, but when Ethan is offered an experimental drug that might save his life from a mysterious CIA agent Vivi (Amber Heard) in return for one last mission.

You would probably think Kevin Costner would be horrible in a gang busters CIA adventure action flick. We’ll you’d be wrong. I have to say that I was amazed by the way he chopped, kicked, punched, and jumped his way through this film. In fact, the action portions of the film, of which there are many, were actually very good. The action was intense. There is a very intense bad guy! This is more like a James Bond kind of film, but it’s got a twist because the 3 Days to Kill has multiple meanings. Ethan and Zoey are forced to stay together and though he is anxious to reconnect, she is appalled at being left with her Dad for 3 days. Every time Ethan gets in the middle of a dangerous mission, he gets a call from his daughter and has to run back to be with her. She’s not a little girl. She’s a high school student, but with her share of problems. So it’s like a cross between a Sean Connery James Bond flick, and Uncle Buck. It mostly works, but there are several sub plots that can’t make up their mind between humor and drama. Things get stretched a little thin. This is worthwhile to watch, if for nothing more than seeing Kevin Costner as a bad ass action star. But it has some really good moments, and some chuckles, whether intentional or not, I’m not sure. All in all, it’s a bit of mixed up jumble of a film that seems to be trying to be everything to everyone. Nobody can pull that off I’m afraid and that’s where it fails. Probably not worth the price of a full price ticket, but well worth a night’s rental once it’s on DVD.

One Race Productions, Radar Pictures, Riddick Canada Productions,

Vin Diesel, Karl Urban, Katee Sackhoff, Dave Bautista, Nolan Gerard Funk, Bokeem Woodbine, Jordi Mollà, Raoul Trujillo, Noah Danby, Neil Napier, Andreas Apergis, Matt Nable

Riddick (Vin Diesel) is left on an uninhabited planet and left for dead. In order to survive, he sets of an emergency beacon, but it attracts an alien race that wants to destroy him, and a ship full of mercenaries from Riddick’s past. This is the follow up to 2004’s “The Chronicles of Riddick”

Action movies are ok, if they’ve got a good story behind them. I’ve never been a big fan of Vin Diesel’s movies, although some of the Fast and Furious series has been rather interesting. The original movie didn’t strike my fancy, and neither did this one. The story isn’t interesting, so I just didn’t enjoy it. Vin Diesel kicks butt just for the sake of showing some good kicks and smashes and an explosion or two, but I was really bored through the whole thing. Now I’m sure there are fans out there, and they’re bound to like everything he does, but for me, this movie just couldn’t cut it. This could have been a half hour Twilight Zone episode and gotten the whole “story” told. It’s got tons of action, but no substance. I didn’t enjoy it very much at all.
