Six high school friends are chatting on Skype one evening, discussion the recent suicide of one of their friends. Soon they realize there is another person in the chat who they know nothing about, but can’t get rid of and can’t kick out of the room. When it becomes clear this person has some sinister intentions for each of them, the horror begins.

Unfriended may be the first cyber horror film. Not one scene is filmed by camera, the entire film is a screen shot of one of the computers. What follows is an interesting bit of filmmaking. This is essentially a “found footage” film, if you will, but because we are looking at a computer screen throughout, there is no bouncing around, the kind of stuff that makes you feel sick. The suspense was actually pretty good for this little horror flick, and though it is definitely geared toward the young adult audience who live life on their smart devices, there is a good message in it all for us. Catching a lot of of the hot topics such as social media bullying, we are shown that their are consequences to decisions we make. It’s so easy to go along with the crowd and get caught up in downright mean activities. We’re also shown the horror that comes when we realize we’ve lost our privacy and someone is controlling our equipment and there is nothing we can do about it. Granted this is not a major motion picture, but it is a decent little horror film that’s in touch with modern technology. Mostly it’s revenge horror, and though we are never sure who is behind it all, it gives you the option to determine for yourself how far you want to take it. The fact that we never know who is really behind all this is part of the scare in this film after all. This is a nice little fright-fest. As long as you don’t go in expecting too much, it’s an enjoyable diversion for a little while.
