Wild Pictures, Defiant Pictures, Alliance Cinema,

Shirley MacLaine, Jessica Lange, Demi Moore, Judd Hirsch, Santiago Segura, Howard Hesseman

Eva (Shirley MacLaine) is a widowed retired school teacher who is looking for a $50,000 check from the insurance company to pay out her husband’s life insurance. She’s a bit taken aback when a check for $5,000.000.00 arrives instead. She wants to return it but once her best friend Maddie (Jessica Lange) finds out about it, she talks her into depositing the check and heading out of a vacation to Spain. Of course the insurance company is embarrassed to learn about the mistake and send out soon to retire insurance investigator, Vespucci (Howard Hesseman) out to try to recover the money. He teams up with Eva’s uptight daughter Crystal (Demi Moore) to try to round her up, but before long, everyone is out after them while they enjoy the sun and a couple new love interests.

This is a rather clever comedy that is pretty funny. Younger folks may have a problem with this movie as they won’t get the humor that is definitely aimed at senior citizens, but the truth is that the jokes are pretty funny. This is like the male version of the story, 2013’s “Last Vegas” with Robert DeNiro, Michael Douglas, Kevin Kline, and Morgan Freeman. Shirley MacLaine is really funny in this role, and is well suited for this movie! Jessica Lange is a bit young for the role, or appears to be, and she is not quite as good as Shirley, but holds her own. Billy Connolly has a small role as Eva’s love interest which is really funny. He even cracked up Shirley to the point where they had to stop filming for 11 minutes while she laughed and laughed. One of the jewels in this film is the annoying uptight daughter Crystal played joyfully by Demi Moore. The character is so different than her real personality, so it’s a riot watching her strut through this role. All in all it was a pleasure to see this, and I was pleasantly surprised by how funny I found it. Don’t expect the young folks to get this, but they ought to see it too to learn how us old folks enjoy ourselves once in a while! Good little movie!

CBS Films, Closest to the Hole Productions,

Mark Wahlberg, Kevin Bacon, John Goodman, J.K. Simmons, Michelle Monaghan, Alex Wolff, Themo Melikidze, Melissa Benoist

April 15, 2013 at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, two pressure cooker bombs went off shooting shrapnel into the crowd of people watching the race and even the participants in the race. All of the law enforcement agencies came together to put together the pieces and to quickly identify the terrorists as the Tsarnaev brothers, home grown terrorists who wanted to bring mayhem and death to the city. When they realized law enforcement was closing in on them, they made an attempt to escape to continue their mayhem in the largest city in the United States, New York City. The whole crew pulled out every trick in their arsenal to try to defeat these two.

A very well told story of the horror and the brave first responders who cane together to bring the city together is very well told. It stars some great actors like Mark Wahlberg, Kevin Bacon, John Goodman, and J.K. Simmons to tell the story clearly and completely. We heard the story in the news as it was happening, but this movie gives us the opportunity to get to know the men and women who worked together to solve this case. With the help of the public and with all the tools at their hands, and a little luck we get to see how the teams work. Of course, I don’t know how accurate this all is, but it seems a great deal of effort was put into making this as truthful as possible. The pace of the story is fine. It takes it time to set the stage, then show the explosions and the horror after the bombs went off. Then it goes through the efforts of each of the teams, and the difficulty of determining who’s in charge at what time. The acting is really good, and the reenactments are very well done. All in all this is an exciting and inspiring story that seems to fairly show the difficulty in trying to prevent things like this from happening. Very well done, and I am glad this film was released to see in the theater, but if you haven’t seen it, it’s now available on DVD and well worth watching.

Marvel Studios, Walt Disney Pictures,

Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, Mads Mikkelsen, Tilda Swinton, Michael Stuhlbarg, Benjamin Bratt, Scott Adkins

Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is a world famous neurosurgeon. But when he is in an auto accident, he finds he has lost the use of his hands for surgery, so he’s willing to go through anything to regain the use of his hands. Once he is introduced to The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) he learns that there is more to the universe than what he can see, and he becomes her student to take her place as leader of the spiritual universe.

This is another in the string of new Disney made Marvel Studios pictures. This one I did not care for in the least. Not only is the formula exactly the same as all the others, but I particularly did not like the Doctor Strange character. Dr. House plays a grumpy old M.D. on TV, but we all know he has a good heart underneath the gruff exterior. But Strange is so freaking obnoxious that I pretty much cheered against him throughout the whole film. The special effects are pretty, but it’s done way better in Inception. Basically Dr. Strange is annoying and an extreme narcissist. The Ancient One is a cocky little sucker, and the bad guys are not really bad, and who knows what all the point is to all this. Basically I found it very minimally enjoyable, and I wished I had skipped this one. They are running these stories into the ground, and this was one of the worst of the lot. Enough superheroes. Let’s find some good stories to tell like we used to have. TV is looking better all the time.
