An Old-Fashioned Christmas is a sequel to “An Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving” Click for Review based on a short story by Louisa May Alcott. Jacqueline Bisset reprises the role of Isabella Caldwell, stately and hard grandmother to Tilly Basset. At the end of An Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving, Tilly was going to leave her fiance and go off with her Grandmother on a two year journey to see the world. It is Christmas and Isabella and Tilly are visiting Ireland. They’ve been invited to stay with a matronly lady who’s goal is to get Tilly married off to her son. Tilly’s secret ambition is to meet her father’s family who are poor farmers in the same county. But when Tilly’s fiance shows up to spend Christmas together, and sparks are already flying between Tilly and the lady’s son, everything turns out wrong, and Tilly has to call on her family to rescue them.

This is a very nice sequel to Louisa May Alcott’s story in the first movie. It fits right in where the other left off and continues the story. It’s a period piece, set in the 1800’s and is right out of a typical romance novel of the “Austen” type, but for what it is, it’s a pretty decent story. There’s a lot going on, and some beautiful Irish scenery. The conflict between Tilly and her Grandmother is well done. Neither is right, and both are learning a lot. This is a really good holiday story if you’re into gothic romance type films. I recommend it. It’s a Hallmark film being shown this year on the Hallmark Channel.

Natalie Hall, Dylan Bruce, Greg Vaughan, Ryan Wynott, Bobby Campo, Amanda Foreman, Charles Shaughnessy, Anika Noelle, Dannika Liddell

Love’s Christmas Journey is the story of recently widowed Ellie King (Natalie Hall), who while still mourning the loss of her husband, travels to visit her brother Aaron Davis (Greg Vaughan) who is sheriff in the small town of Haddenton. Aaron has two small children, and Ellie takes care of the kids, reading stories to them, and trying to make friends and enjoy the holidays. When a young man is falsely blamed for burning down the mayor’s barn, Ellie steps in and defies the town and proclaims the boy innocent. Then Aaron turns up missing, and is nowhere to be found. Everyone is praying for a holiday miracle to resolve the problems and bring Aaron back home in time for Christmas Day.

This is a brand new Hallmark Christmas Special and is not available yet other than on TV. It’s a long film, 4 hours, done in two parts. It’s a great story of trust and values, and a really great western adventure. There’s a lot of action and excitement, and it’s a very good holiday tale.

This will no doubt be available next year, but if you get a chance to watch this one on TV this holiday season, keep an eye out for it. It’s a heartwarming tale. As the first holiday film of the year, it makes me look forward to the ones that will follow. What a good start to Christmas 2011.

Joyce McKinney, Dr. Hong, Kent Gavin, Jackson Shaw, Peter Tory, Troy Williams

Tabloid is a documentary about former Miss Wyoming World, Joyce McKinney who made headlines in England in 1977. Ms. McKinney and a couple hired “bodyguards” abducted a Mormon Missionary with a gun, took him to a cottage and kept him handcuffed for days. When he finally got a chance to make a phone call, he called the police and reported that he had been abducted. This set off a flurry of tabloid reports between competing newspapers in England about the “Manacled Mormon” or The Mormon sex in chains” case. She was allowed out on bail after being captured, and in disguises and with fake passports, fled the country. For decades she obsessed over this guy, and was caught in 1984 stalking his wife and kids again, and rose to prominence once again in 2008 when she had her pet dog cloned in Korea. In this documentary, Joyce gets to tell her side of the story.

This is a bizarre story, for sure. Joyce is definitely a bit demented, and is a colorful character. She reportedly was very upset with the documentary as she felt it did not say what she expected it to, but that in itself is a bit bizarre as she does 90% of the talking. But I suppose in the way it is edited, she could feel that it put her in a bad light. But since she is barking mad, I guess that’s fair. I was interested in this film in a “Jerry Springer Show” kind of way, like we can’t turn the stupid TV off until Maury tells us if the baby is actually that guy’s or not. But there isn’t much here. It’s a weird story to begin with, and there’s really nothing to watch. I feel like after 90 minutes of this, I didn’t learn anything, and I’m no better off than when it started. So in a staring at a car crash kind of way, it’s ok to watch this, but I certainly wouldn’t go out of my way to track it down. It’s just fluff. Nothing to see here, move along.

John Cho, Kal Penn, Neil Patrick Harris, Amir Blumenfeld, Paula Garcés, Danneel Ackles, Thomas Lennon, Danny Trejo, David Krumholtz, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Patton Oswalt, Elias Koteas

Six Years have passed, and Harold and Kumar are now living very different lives. Kumar is still a pot head, and his apartment and his life are a total mess. But Harold is married and living in a great home and working in an office. His wife’s family, especially the father-in-law who doesn’t like him very much is coming to visit and brought the perfect Christmas tree. Harold and Kumar don’t see each other anymore. But on Christmas Eve when a strange package addressed to Harold arrives at the door of Kumar’s apartment, he decides to bring it over in person. While there, he burns down the perfect tree, and the two of them set off on a quest to find a replacement tree, all over Manhattan half the night. The movie is their travels all over town from one disaster to another to try to replace the tree.

This film was very funny! In fact, this was much better than I expected, and a vast improvement over the last one. We know these characters already, so they get right down to the humor from the very start. The jokes are rapid fire, and certainly there were a bunch of things I didn’t see coming. The jokes are really funny. The 3D is a real plus, simply because it’s cheesy. They joke around with the 3D effects and make fun of themselves all the while. This is what makes it really worthwhile to watch in 3D so you can be in the middle of the cheesy effects. There are some funny cameos too. Neil Patrick Harris is back again, and hysterical as the lead character in the Christmas Extravaganza. Now, Neil got killed in the last film, but we find out how he survived as well. It’s an adult film, for sure. There are some outrageous things, like a drug addicted baby, the Russian Mafia, and even a White Castle.

This was a fun film to watch in the theater, and I enjoyed it very much. I’m pretty sure it’ll be worth it to catch it on the big screen in 3D, so I’m sure the small screen DVD will work, but the humor is real, and it is a funny film. I enjoyed it a lot.
