Back in 1979, relations with Iran were really bad. The Ayatollah had taken power, and they were furious that the US was harboring the deposed Shah. They wanted him returned and hung. A crowd of terrorists overran the US Embassy and took everyone hostage. Six people managed to slip away and escaped to the Canadian embassy and remained as hidden guests of the Canadian ambassador. The CIA set out to rescue them before the Iranians found out about them. They concocted a plan to pretend to make a movie while all the while helping these people to escape Iran. Argo was selected by the Academy as Best Picture for 2012.

I remember when these events happened. We were encouraged to send a letter to the Canadian government thanking them for the rescue of our hostages. All of the credit went to the Canadians for their work. This was mentioned in the movie as the CIA who actually hatched this plan, could not take any credit for it. Until now. This movie is really the Ben Affleck show. Is it the best film of 2012? I don’t think so. I really think Lincoln was robbed. But it is an exiting story. Perhaps Affleck is guilty of taking on too much all at once, although he must be really proud of the awards that this film garnered. But it was a teensy bit of a disappointment for me. It seems that the best moments of the movie are all in the clips that we have already seen. Also, since this is a real event, it’s hard to generate a lot of suspense because we already know the outcome. All they can tell us is some of the details in the middle. However, it’s a film that you should watch, just for the historical value. John Goodman and Alan Arkin did a good job, and added to the atmosphere of the film. They have one great scene near the end that is really cool. Victor Garber is the Canadian ambassador, and he always is good in this kind of role. All in all it’s a good story and it’s well worth taking the time to watch it. Just don’t go in with expectations too high, as you might, like me, feel a bit let down.

NALA Films, Gary Sanchez Productions,

Will Ferrell, Gael García Bernal, Diego Luna, Genesis Rodriguez, Pedro Armendáriz Jr., Nick Offerman

The Alvarez Brothers, Armando (Will Ferrel) and Raul (Diego Luna) are trying to save their ancestral. But Raul has been messing with drugs and set himself against drug lord Onza (Gael Garcia Bernal) and soon are in the middle of a drug war with DEA Agents Parker (Nick Offerman) and Agent 2 (Jerry Collins). What follows is a bloody, violent drug war in this Spanish language Novella spoof.

It helps to be familiar with the Spanish TV Novellas as this is a true parody of those. All the jokes are around that, and if you get that, you’ll be in on all the inside stuff. But even if you’re not, if you’re looking for the right thing, this is a hysterical film. Granted, a lot of people expect to see a serious Western starring Will Ferrell, and are shocked to find a corny story, completely in Spanish, with unbelievable fight sequences. Hey, this is a satire, folks! Will Ferrell can speak Spanish. Yeah, he does all the dialog himself, and even sings in this film. But his horrible American accent and childish dialog is hysterical. But there’s lots of other jokes here as well. Just like some people cannot get the King Arthur gags from Monte Python and the Holy Grail, or the race driving humor of Cannonball Run, or other such movies of satire, it takes a special sense of humor to get this one.

But in my opinion, Ferrell did an amazing job in this movie and it was really funny. As it started, I could only think, “What the heck?” but as I got into it, I found myself laughing harder and harder. A really unusual film with BIG English subtitles for us gringos, and a great sense of humor.

Chaos Squared, Harrington Talents, Sideshow Pictures,

Bill Moseley, Danielle Harris, Nate Dushku, Samantha Siong, Anthony Marks, Billy Magnussen

Mary Hachett was an insane loony-bin patient who was raped by a night guard, had a baby, but escaped and was killed years ago, but every year on “Blood Night” the high school students would celebrate the memory of this horrible event. But this year is worse than usual as bodies start to pile up at the wild parties held on Blood Night. Or maybe it was the seance that the kids held with a Ouija Board on top of Mary’s grave that started all the killing? Any way, for the kids on Long Island who survive the night, this year’s Blood Night will be one to remember.

This is a fairly decent teen slasher flick that is full of lots of blood and guts, clever methods of disposing people, and lots of teen girls with little or no clothing. Everything that the likes of Friday the 13th has is bundled into this film. I was waiting for this DVD for a long time due to the fact that I’m a horror movie fan at heart, and suddenly it showed up on “Watch Instantly” on Netflix and I was able to stream this while waiting for my next shipment of disks. Well, I did not expect too much from it, and I was pleasantly surprised. It’s not that bad at all. Certainly there’s a ton of films just like this, but this one has a nice back story, lots of good performances and real screams and terror, and lots of blood and guts. It’s well worth the download.
