Jason Bateman, Melissa McCarthy, Jon Favreau, Amanda Peet, Robert Patrick, John Cho, Genesis Rodriguez, Maggie Elizabeth Jones, Eric Stonestreet, Ben Falcone, Morris Chestnut, Clark Duke, T.I., Steve Little

Sandy Patterson (Jason Bateman) is a dude. He’s a mild mannered Bank Executive who lives with his family in Colorado. But falling victim to a scam, Sandy has found his entire life has been stolen when Diana (Melissa McCarthy) steals his identity, orders credit card after credit card and maxes them out, and then gets arrested, causing Sandy a lot of trouble and causing him to lose his job. The Colorado police aren’t able to go after her in Florida, so Sandy decides to pick up what pieces he has, and heads off to Florida to find Diana and bring her back to Colorado to clear his name. What follows is a series of comedic pieces like we find in “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles”.

Melissa McCarthy was pretty good in this comedy, and she pulled off the role really well. She has great comedic skills and is able to fit into this half white trash/half career criminal lady. Jason Bateman is probably the weakest point in the film. I like the guy, but he is a bit overwhelmed with this role. It requires a LOT of screen time, and a little bit of his schtick goes a long way. After a while, his whining grows annoying. The concept is pretty funny though, and it isn’t a bad movie. I enjoyed watching it, but was glad I waited for DVD to watch it, rather than spending the cash to see this on the big screen. This is a decent comedy with enough gags and slapstick to make it worth devoting the time to it, so if you’re in the mood for a mindless comedy, you could do much worse than this one. I enjoyed it.

Arcade Pictures, Strike Entertainment, Studio Canal,

Ashley Bell, Julia Garner, Spencer Treat Clark, David Jensen, Tarra Riggs, Louis Herthum, Muse Watson, Erica Michelle, Andrew Sensenig, Judd Lormand

Picking up after the last movie, Nell Sweetzer (Ashley Bell) is recovering from the events surrounding the “last exorcism”. She’s trying to put her life back in order when the horror from before finds her again sending her into an even more horrible plan.

My wife warned me about this movie. She saw it in a theater in the Philippines before it was even released in the US. But when I saw it out on DVD, I knew I had to check it out. My wife is a connoisseur of horror films, and when she hates a film, I should trust her. This was a really boring film. Ashley Bell did a really good job with what she had, but the movie left no one home when they turned the lights out. No scares, no real tension, and even worse, a horrible story. I love a good horror film as much as my wife does, but I really could not get into this movie, and I really felt like it was a total waste. It was just a bad idea, and they should have definitely put this off until they had a better script. I thought it was really bad, and if you follow me regularly you’ll see I don’t hate many movies, but this one was a waste of my time. I’m really glad I didn’t plunk down the cash to see this one in the theater. You can do better, trust me!

Troika Pictures, WWE Studios, Emergency Films,

Halle Berry, Abigail Breslin, Morris Chestnut, Michael Eklund, David Otunga, Michael Imperioli, Justina Machado, José Zúñiga, Roma Maffia, Evie Thompson, Denise Dowse, Ella Rae Peck

Jordan Turner (Halle Berry) is a darn good 911 operator, but in the middle of a very stressful call, Jordan makes a bad decision and the call ends very badly. She is unable to forgive herself and struggles with whether or not she can do the job anymore. She falls into the role of instructor, teaching the ropes to the rookies, when a disturbing call comes in, and Jordan has to jump back in to the fray. She does her best to help a young girl, Casey Welson (Abigaili Breslin) who has been kidnapped and is being held in the trunk of a car. Through breakneck chases, near misses, and lots of mistakes, with the help of her boyfriend cop (Morris Chestnut) they are in a life and death struggle to find this guy before it’s too late.

This is a fairly decent suspense film. Halle is certainly beautiful as ever and very masterful in playing the harrowing stress that 911 operators must be under. This must be a horrible job most of the time. As the movie points out, you’re in the midst of the crisis, but there’s no resolution. You rarely ever get to find out how it ends. The suspense is real, and the movie is fast paced and very stressful to the viewer as well. My only real complaint with the movie is that the ending is rather silly. I realize they didn’t have too many options on how to finish this, but the whole 911 operator turned lead investigator is pretty silly. And then “surprise” ending was also kind of cheesy, although I’m sure the audience cheered. Abigail Breslin didn’t get to do a whole lot in the movie, but her role as the kidnapped girl was handled pretty well. You will believe she’s really going through the terror, and she portrays that wonderfully.

All in all, this is a decent suspense thriller, and well worth a rental.
