Insomnia Productions (II),

Bruce Davison, Randall Batinkoff, Trevor Morgan, Brooke Peoples, Hallock Beals, Lauren Storm, Art Fox, Bill J. Stevens, Maggie Henry, Ron Johnston

It’s the evening before the small river town in Illinois (St Charles) celebrates the annual event “Scarecrow Festival” and two teen boys, Corey (Trevor Morgan) and Scott (Hallock Beals), take their girlfriends out to Munger Road where supposedly paranormal events occur, to try to scare them to death. But on the same night, news comes in to Chief Kirkhoven (Bruce Davison) that a killer has gotten out of prison and may be on his way back to St. Charles. He and his deputy set out to check it out and the teens car suddenly fails and will no longer start, leaving them stranded out in the woods for the night. The Chief then ends up trying to clean up the horror unleashed upon the young people in part one of this old fashioned horror film.

This film is supposedly based upon a true story. Well, let’s say it is based on rumored events. There is a Munger Road, and it did have a train track that crosses the road, and supposedly a school bus stalled out there and was struck by a train killing a lot of children. Real kids have a sort of rite of passage to go out with baby powder on the bumper, and sit on the tracks, waiting for the ghosts of these children to push the car off the tracks to protect them. But it’s been debunked a couple times as just a little dip in the road that causes the car to roll away by itself. Still, many people believe the stories and it’s one of those cool local traditions to scare your younger siblings with the stories generation after generation. But as for the movie, it’s not perfect by any means, and it’s been lambasted by a lot of people, probably somewhat justly. First of all, this film is now several years old, and it just stops right in the middle of the action with a “TO BE CONTINUED” on the screen. But I remember the entire theater getting close to violent when “Lord of the Rings, Fellowship of the Ring” ended like that, and you would probably call that a good film. But it is true that the producers promise a sequel, and say they are working on it, continuing right where this one left off on the morning of the Scarecrow Festival. But as of now, it hasn’t been made. Also, I found the film really, really dark, and by that I mean, NO LIGHT. Much of it was too dark to see anything going on, and it was a bit like listening to a radio drama sometimes. But you can mitigate that by watching it in a really dark room, and putting up with the suspense of not being able to see much going on, just like the characters would be experiencing. But the basic story was good. Sure it borrows from some classic horror stories. But all horror films do, there are really only a few different stories anyway. But this is not the bloody, gory horror of many films. Instead, it’s spooky and creepy, and very suspenseful. All in all, this is a lot of what a good horror film should be, one that keeps you on the edge of your seat. They did a nice job of painting the fear on the screen so we can see it (sometimes, when it’s not too dark), and it will creep you out. But remember, you’re not going to get an ending unless the follow up comes out, so don’t be upset when it suddenly just stops. As long as you’re prepared for that, I think horror fans will enjoy this movie. And if the sequel ever returns, I’ll be happy to report on that, as I can’t wait to see the rest.

Mosaic Media Group, Mimran Schur Pictures,

Anna Kendrick, John Francis Daley, Craig Robinson, Rob Corddry, Ana Gasteyer, Calum Worthy

The rapture has happened, and half the world is gone. The rest who were left behind are dealing with some tough stuff, with meteors, blood rain, cricket like creatures who insult you, and annoying sarcastic foul-mouthed crows. Two teens, Lindsey (Anna Kendrick) and Ben House (John Francis Daley) are left behind, trying to start a sandwich cart, and getting by. But Lindsey is a virgin, and attracts the attention of the antichrist, Beast (Craig Robinson) who wants to marry him. So it’s Lindsey and Ben against the Anti-Christ trying to save themselves and their families in this raucous, blasphemous comedy.

When I was a little kid, I carried my papers around my paper route every night, rain or snow. I lived in the country, so it was a long walk between houses. I took my coins that I got every week and bought records, as I love music, and every month a Mad Magazine. As I got bigger, I even got my own subscription to Mad. When I got a little older, I kept reading Mad and also subscribed to National Lampoon. Perhaps this is where I developed and honed my sarcastic sense of humor. I get myself in trouble when I talk to someone who doesn’t know me who doesn’t expect me to say exactly the opposite of what I really mean. I don’t typically watch So You Think You Can Dance, but my wife does religiously. There was a moment in this years tryouts when a tiny little girl named Malice was auditioning and didn’t hear something that the judges asked her. She said, I’m sorry, “I’m a little deaf”, and Nigel asked her, “Are you really?”. Without skipping a beat she said, “Yes, I can’t hear from one ear” and he said, “For Real” and she said said “No”. Everyone was a bit stunned, but I thought it was hysterical. This film is not the funniest film in history. When you put it up against some really funny comedies, this one doesn’t give you non-stop funny lines. But there is a sarcastic nature to this film that I find hysterical. It’s like I know they realize they are being ridiculous, but I know that half the people watching don’t get the joke and just don’t have a clue. These guys picked a subject that cannot be really made fun of, and lampoon it to the max. This is not anti-religion, nor is it bashing religion. In fact, it has nothing at all to do with religion. It is, however, taking a serious subject and making a tongue in cheek rip-roarious comedy about it. This is like Monty Python taking on Jesus’ brother in The Life Of Brian, or Dudley Moore with his Wholly Moses where he accidentally eavesdropped on the burning bush and thought God was talking to him. This takes on the rapture with some very, very, very sarcastic and raunchy humor. Personally I thought Monty Python and the Holy Grail was the funniest movie I have ever seen, and my little brother and I were literally on the floor laughing even during the opening credits. have seen people sit through the movie and never crack a smile and call it the worst piece of trash ever. That’s because they don’t have the sarcasm gene. The plan for overthrowing The Beast is so ridiculously planned out step by step, that when Lindsey says, “What could possibly go wrong?” we’re sure she means everything will. If you have the sarcasm gene, and can’t get grossed out by irreverent humor to the nth degree, this is going to be funny. If you’re a “pucker butt” then don’t even start with this one. I thought it was really funny. God appears in this film. He’s not in the list of credits above, and I’m not going to tell you who God is, but it had to be him!

Millennium Films, Corsan, Nu Image Films,

Robert De Niro, John Travolta, Milo Ventimiglia, Elizabeth Olin

Ford (Robert DeNiro) is an American soldier who served on the front lines in Bosnia. He’s had his fill of war, and is disgusted with the things he saw and did and decided to get away from it all. He is staying alone in a cabin in the Appalachian mountains to just be left alone. But he is a bit lonely, and along comes Kovac, a Serbian soldier who bumps into Ford (later we find out not by accident) and the two start out an apparent friendship which turns into a resumption of the war as both guys are deeply troubled, yet trying to extract revenge on each other.

This is a thought provoking film. It should not really be categorized as an “action” film, as the dialog and discussion fills most of it. There is a bit of a chase and certainly one or the other getting the drop on each other over and over again, but the whole thing is really to show the pain the two are in, even though they were on opposite sides. This is not a great movie, nor is it a bad movie. It is, as I said before, a thought provoking movie though.

DeNiro does DeNiro, and it’s a typical performance from him, although I hate to see him so sad, as he does play a very dark and troubled guy. Likewise, we get from Travolta what we would expect from him too. He’s pretty good, although those people who are really familiar with the area will find lots of things to complain about his performance, appearance, and accent which I’m told is all off. But that’s not really relevant to enjoying the film, unless, as I said, you’re really familiar with the area. It’s kind of like someone playing a southerner with a Boston accent. Still, the horrors of war are presented to us first hand, and no matter which way either of these guys turns, we know they’re both losing. After it’s over, we just want to say “Can’t we all just get along?”

This is a dark film, and certainly not a pleasure to watch, as it’s very sad and troubling, but it is a very cerebral film and if you’re a fan of that type of movie, this is ok. I don’t highly recommend this, and it’s certainly not for everyone, but it’s really not deserving of the criticism being heaped on it. It’s somewhere in the middle.
