** Angel of Christmas

Michael G. Larkin Productions,

Jonathan Scarfe, Wanda Cannon, Jennifer Finnigan, Candice-May Langlois, Francis X. McCarthy, Chloe McClay, Jessica Rose, Holly Robinson Peete, Nelson Wong

Susan (Jennifer Finnigan) is a newspaper copy editor who had dreams of being a writer. She is offered the opportunity of writing a piece about an antique Christmas angel that was carver by her great-grandfather. Susan writes down the facts that she knows about the object, and the editor is quite impressed, but in order to get the article in the paper, she has to complete it by Christmas Eve. But she’s got to learn more about the rest of the story and find a ending or else it can’t be published. But she runs into a fellow named Brady (Jonathan Scarfe) who seems to be everywhere, and who is intent on getting her to loosen up a little bit and regain some of her Christmas spirit. But as she grows closer to Brady, there are some secrets waiting to unfold to help her find an ending to her story.

This is a very lovely little tale all surrounding one object, the angel tree topper. There is a stunning story around this and the plot twists and turns through a maze of facts as Susan learns bit by bit the history of this magical piece. The script is well written and it’s a fresh Christmas story. This is actually a fast paced and exiting story with a lot of surprises. Very well performed, the casting is good, the setting is good, and the surprise ending (although you’ll probably figure it out before it happens) is well done. This was an enjoyable experience, so give it a shot.

** A Christmas Detour

Front Street Pictures, Side Street Post,

Candace Cameron Bure, Paul Greene, Sarah Strange, Alisson Amigo, Mark Brandon, Kaj-Erik Eriksen,
David Lewis, Mackenzie Mowat, Barbara Niven, Edwin Perez, Marcus Rosner, Ingrid Tesch, Andrea Ware, Nelson Wong

Paige Summerlind (Candace Cameron Bure) is a shaky bride-to-be with the perfect fiance. She has yet to meet his parents, and they’re rich and old fashioned, so they’ve scheduled a meeting with her in New York City. But during the flight, the pilot informs them that the New York airports are closed due to a bad winter storm, and so they are diverted to Buffalo. But as soon as the NYC airports reopen, Buffalo is getting hit by the storm of the century. Meanwhile, her seatmate Dylan (Paul Greene) is driving her crazy with his attitude. Turns out he’s had his heart broken not long ago and is anti-relationship. But the only way Paige has a chance of making it to NYC is to hitch a ride in the last available 4-Wheel Drive jeep in Buffalo with Dylan and a bickering couple really down on marriage who are trying to talk her out of it.

Since Dancing With the Stars, Candace Cameron Bure and Danica McKeller have had a little rivalry going. I’m afraid Danica edged her out this Christmas with “Crown for Christmas”. But this “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles” for Christmas was pretty good. Last year, Candace blew her away by a mile. Candace has been doing some really great films each year, and is certainly the one star that I look for each Christmas. This film was good, had a lot of humor, and I did enjoy it very much. But it didn’t have the spark that the others had. Still it’s a clever story, and it suits her style. The situation was humorous, and we figured the two would get together in the end. This is my second favorite of the Hallmark films for 2015, and well worth watching. It will be repeated all through the season.

** Crown for Christmas

Motion Picture Corporation of America (MPCA),

Danica McKellar, Rupert Penry-Jones, Ellie Botterill, Emma Burdon-Sutton, Pavel Douglas, Alexandra Evans, Amy Marston, Colin McFarlane, Rose Neville, Rollo Skinner

Allie Evans (Danica McKeller) is the oldest child in the family who has, for years, been keeping the rest of the family together after the sudden loss of her mother and father. She is working as a maid is a fancy hotel when she gets in a bit of trouble and is fired just before Christmas. It turns out that one of the guests is the Maxmillian, King of Winshire (Rupert Penry-Jones). One of his personal assistants finds out that Allie has been fired, and he takes it upon himself to hire Allie for the holidays to take care of the Maxmillian’s child through the holidays at the palace in Winshire. The King is scheduled to be married to a princess of a neighboring kingdom to cement the relationship between the two countries, but though he’s set to do his duty to the throne, he can’t help but be toppled by Allie’s free spirit and charm.

This 2015 Hallmark fantasy romance is starring Danica McKellar. This is the perfect role for her, and she pulls it off perfectly. Last year she had a role that was not nearly suited to her, and this film is just perfect for her talent. The story is funny and whimsical and a great deal of heart. Rupert does a wonderful job as the King, and his staff are all ideal as well. Basically everyone in this movie is just about perfect from the child to the potential queen and beyond. This is the kind of film Hallmark does best, and this is probably the best film of the season. I really enjoyed it, and it’s one of the ones you ought to watch out for!

Legendary Pictures, Universal Pictures,

Adam Scott, Toni Collette, David Koechner, Allison Tolman, Conchata Ferrell, Emjay Anthony, Stefania Owen, Krista Stadler

Poor Max (Emjay Anthony) is having the worst Christmas ever. He’s doing his best to keep believing in Santa and has written his letter. But a whole bunch of annoying relatives are showing up to celebrate with them, and the two mean sisters steal his letter and reads it out loud to the whole table. Max has had it and in a fit of rage, he tears the letter up and throws it out the window. Instantly the weather changes as the worst storm in history settles in knocking out power, telephone, and radio/tv. Little did they realize that Max’s lack of Christmas spirit has brought them Krampus, the dark side of St. Nicholas and the Christmas devil to terrorize and take away the family members one by one. This Christmas horror film is based on the German Christmas legend.

This is a very unusual film. Filled with lots of old legends sparked by Krista Stadler who plays the aged Grandmother who knows the stories of Krampus and sets the family straight on the danger. This is a PG-13 horror film, so though it’s really “make you jump” scary, and the monsters (Krampus and his minions) are rather horrific, there’s nothing completely out of the ordinary. David Koechner has the “Cousin Eddie” role that Randy Quaid played so well in Christmas Vacation, and certainly Conchata Ferrell (Charlie Sheen and Ashton Kutcher’s housemaid in 2 1/2 Men) has an excellent role as the grumpy alcoholic Aunt who is not far from her 2 1/2 Men character. She adds a great deal to the mix. Certainly though, the cast was really well put together and they all played off each other very well. There is a great deal of humor in this movie as well, so it doesn’t take itself too seriously. After all, it is a ludicrous situation. There are a couple things you will not want to miss, should you head for the theater for this out of the ordinary Christmas thriller. First, be sure to arrive on time, as the opening sequence is a rendition of “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” with a slow motion montage of what looking like Christmas really means in America! It’s a very well done piece. Also, the very end gives us a surprise view of what really happened to the family members who have been killed off one by one throughout the film. All in all it was a very enjoyable film, great music and sound effects, spectacular special effects, and winter scene that truly looks colder than when Lara and Dr. Zhivago stayed in the country for the winter! This was an enjoyable film and if you’re a horror lover, like I am, go spend the 10 bucks to see it.

** My One Christmas Wish

Entertainment One Television,

Amber Riley, Matreya Fedor, Jarod Joseph, Priscilla Faia, Camille Sullivan, Ali Skovbye

Jackie Turner (Amber Riley) is a college student who is very lonely. Her family is broken and she is all alone for the holidays, again. She’s an excellent student and is given the assignment, against her wishes, to monitor a group of troubled students who have been in trouble and are assigned to this group. With the urging of her best friend, Jackie decides to enter an add on Craig’s List for her one Christmas Wish, to have a family to share Christmas with. But with all the trials and tribulations of the group, together they decide to make is into something move.

This new for 2015 uplifting movie from UP TV is a heartwarming story of the lonely side of the holidays. A lot of people don’t have a family to share the season with, and find themselves very sad and depressed for the holidays. With the help of her new found friends, she’s able to put together the pieces and find some comfort in the season. Amber (You might remember her from Glee) does an excellent job in this role. Her energy keeps the story flowing. The students in the group are really flawed. They do a good job of playing the troubled young ones. There is a special scene where Jackie tries to find her father. Her visit is very moving. All in all, UP TV has brought to the screen a moving story of the darker side of the holidays.
