New Line Cinema, Contrafilm,

Dwayne Johnson, Michael Caine, Josh Hutcherson, Vanessa Hudgens, Luis Guzmán, Kristin Davis

Sean (Josh Hutcherson) receives a mysterious message which he assumes is from his grandfather. His step father Hank (Dwayne Johnson) helps him to decode it and they are convinced that his grandfather, Alexander (Michael Caine) has discovered the island described by Jules Verne in his novels. Thinking it a good opportunity to bond with his step son, they set off to find Alexander and in the process have an amazing adventure.

This film is really a film for kids. Perhaps I’m being too hard on it in my rating, but I was not overly impressed with the film. Dwayne Johnson is not really an actor, although he’s trying, but he tends to “Tooth Fairy” it up and it’s rather silly a lot of the time. Michael Caine is awesome, but not given a lot of script to work with in this outing. To get another name in the cast, they use a script device where they can’t find a way to where the island is supposed to be, so they hire Gabato (Luis Guzman) and his daughter Kailani (Vanessa Hudgens) to take them, crating some sort of love interest. Every adventure film for kids has to have a boy and a girl lead. In this case, they have nothing to do but stand around a look pretty. The CGI is good, the cinematography is good, and the story is very mediocre. We’ve seen this film a bunch of times in different versions. That being said, it’s a good film for kids, and is probably an adventure story that they will enjoy, assuming kids aren’t quite as picky about originality. They are more forgiving about such things. I won’t give away the plot any further, but trust me, it gets pretty silly about half way through the film. There was just not enough to the story to allow me to recommend this.
