Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) pretty much had her life ripped to shreds in the first three Scream movies. Well, she’s back in Woodsboro in a book tour to promote her self-help book. Writing the book has put her life back in order again, but Ghostface is back, and causing all kinds of havoc. Dewey (David Arquette) is now the sheriff, and Gale (Courteney Cox), the reporter who made a name for herself over the “Stab” franchise (a movie within a movie) is married to Dewey. Since everyone involved with the original killings is at risk, Ghostface is after all of them.

I have to say that it’s pretty funny that the Wayan’s brothers did such a great job of skewering these movies in their “Scary Movie” series, that I truly can’t remember the real story compared to the Scary Movie versions. I truly couldn’t figure out how Dewey was the sheriff when he was the killer in one of the films. Then I remembered that it wasn’t Dewey, it was Doofus in the Scary Movie satire. 🙂 Oh well. That’s the problem with this whole series. And I was rather disappointed in this one as well. I found it so similar to everything else, with nothing really new or interesting. The killings are almost all the same, and it’s just one after another which really gets boring. Were we spoiled by the other films like the Final Destination series or Saw, where they found new and interesting ways to kill someone. Ghostface is just dull. The moview wasn’t really suspenseful, nor was it very interesting.

Perhaps if you are a big fan of the original movies, you’ll enjoy seeing the same thing 10 years later, but even as a fan of horror films, I was way underwhelmed by this one. It’s ok as a rental, but certainly not something I would go out of my way to find. It’s just plain tedious. Some of the newer characters never took off either. Hayden Panettiere is a really strange annoying character in this one, and Emma Roberts is a pretty decent actress, but seemed really lost in this whole adventure. And the ending is really rather stupid.

Insight Film Studios, Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit (CPTC), Province of British Columbia Film Incentive BC

Lacey Chabert, Tygh Runyan, Brandon Quinn, Mercedes McNab

Two couples are stranded deep in the desert when thier truck rolls down a ravine. They are far from anywhere and short on supplies. As the days pass, they have no water, and suffer dearly in the sun and heat, and fight wild animals and cold at night. With no one to help, is it possible that any of them can survive?

This film was released to video in 2010, and is often available for rent, or on TV. I caught it on “Watch Instantly” on what is left of NetFlix. This is a fairly clever survival movie. It has it’s problems. Some of the decisions they make are pretty stupid decisions. At one point, deeply lost in the desert, there are electrical wires in the distance. Oops.

This is sometimes billed as a horror film. It’s not. It’s a suspenseful survival film though. Not a well known film, but it’s got a “made for TV” feel to it, even though it’s not, really. But all that aside, it’s a story that has its moments and will drag you in and keep you interested. It could be much worse. Give it a shot if you’re in the mood for a suspenseful story.

Lava Box Entertainment Group, Noble Productions Ltd

Brett Moses, Ryan Hurst, Dominique Swain, Michael Parks, Lee Ann Womack, James Parks, Ron Canada, Wes Brown, Tracy Byrd, James Bobinger

Jimmy Wayne Collins (Brett Moses) is a country star with a career on the rocks. He decides to head bck home to Texas to nurse his dying father, Pete (Michael Parks, and ends up learning a lot about himself and the ties he left behind in his youth. He’s got lots of burned bridges to try to repair as he learns that there’s more to life than fortune and fame and many ways to live an honorable life.

First and foremost, this is a western. But it is much deeper and darker than most. Jimmy has been carrying a secret for many, many years which is eating him alive. When his Dad is really sick, he feels an obligation to take care of him, but neither he, nor his dad, enjoy each other’s company. But he still tries to do what it right. It is clear he is deeply depressed. The secret he is hiding is too much to bear. Plus the stress of being a one hit wonder is pretty tough. This is a well acted morality play of right and wrong. Will Jimmy be able to right the wrong he did years ago and make things right? It’s a deep movie, but pretty good.

Boll Kino Beteiligungs GmbH & Co. KG, Herold Productions, Brightlight Pictures

Jason Statham, Leelee Sobieski, John Rhys-Davies, Ron Perlman, Claire Forlani, Kristanna Loken, Matthew Lillard, Brian J. White, Ray Liotta, Burt Reynolds, Will Sanderson, Mike Dopud, Tania Saulnier

Farmer (Jason Statham), who was adopted by his village in the kingdom of Ehb has a simple life. But when his wife and son leave for town to sell vegetables, the farm is attacked by a bunch of creatures called Krugs. His neighbor and friend help Farmer to defeat them, but when he arrives in the town, his wife has been captured and his son killed. The Krugs are controlled by an evil wizard Gallian (Ray Liotta) and he is responsible, so this starts Farmer and a bunch of heroes to start off on a quest to save King Konreid (Burt Reynolds) and protect the kingdom. This film was based on the popular role-playing game Dungeon Siege.

Obviously this film was made in 2007 to try to cache in on the popularity of stories like Lord of the Rings. I haven’t played the video game, so I can’t compare it to that, but it is not the strongest of films. However, it is a simple adventure/fanstasy movie that delevers just that. Ray Liotta is very badly cast as the evil magician. He’s a good guy and a decent actor, but the heavy Brooklyn accent makes him seem really out of place in a medieval world of monsters and wizards. Aside from that, though, it’s pretty decently cast. Leelee Sobieski is a unique character, as she very mysteriously appears in a scene from time to time. She must be a character from the game, but I never quite caught on, but it’s lucky we had her cause she did some damage to the bad guys. 🙂

Obviously not a mainstream blockbuster of a film, but one of those that you may have missed that is a good rainy afternoon adventure film. Definitely a boy’s movie, but those are nice now and then. Lots of great battles and heroes that stand up for right. It’s an escape that works once in a while.
