Farmer (Jason Statham), who was adopted by his village in the kingdom of Ehb has a simple life. But when his wife and son leave for town to sell vegetables, the farm is attacked by a bunch of creatures called Krugs. His neighbor and friend help Farmer to defeat them, but when he arrives in the town, his wife has been captured and his son killed. The Krugs are controlled by an evil wizard Gallian (Ray Liotta) and he is responsible, so this starts Farmer and a bunch of heroes to start off on a quest to save King Konreid (Burt Reynolds) and protect the kingdom. This film was based on the popular role-playing game Dungeon Siege.
Obviously this film was made in 2007 to try to cache in on the popularity of stories like Lord of the Rings. I haven’t played the video game, so I can’t compare it to that, but it is not the strongest of films. However, it is a simple adventure/fanstasy movie that delevers just that. Ray Liotta is very badly cast as the evil magician. He’s a good guy and a decent actor, but the heavy Brooklyn accent makes him seem really out of place in a medieval world of monsters and wizards. Aside from that, though, it’s pretty decently cast. Leelee Sobieski is a unique character, as she very mysteriously appears in a scene from time to time. She must be a character from the game, but I never quite caught on, but it’s lucky we had her cause she did some damage to the bad guys. 🙂
Obviously not a mainstream blockbuster of a film, but one of those that you may have missed that is a good rainy afternoon adventure film. Definitely a boy’s movie, but those are nice now and then. Lots of great battles and heroes that stand up for right. It’s an escape that works once in a while.
