Disney Channel, Salty Pictures

Bridgit Mendler, Mia Talerico, Leigh Allyn Baker, Bradley Steven Perry, Jason Dolley, Eric Allen Kramer, Abbie Cobb, Michael Kagan, Debra Monk, Ernie Grunwald, E.E. Bell, David Wells, Sean Bott, Pamela Dunlap, Big Budah

Teddy Duncan (Bridgit Mendler) and her family have decided to spend Christmas with Mom Amy’s (Leigh Allyn Baker) parents, The Blankenhoopers, in Palm Springs. Teddy wants to travel to Florida for Spring Break, but to stop her whining about it, Dad suggests that if she wants to act like an adult, she should figure out how to buy the ticket on her own, thinking that would stop the constant begging. Instead, when the airlines offer a free ticket to anyone who gives up their seat, Teddy hops up and volunteers. Amy’s not going to let her go alone, so she also gets off the plane. This leaves Dad and the brother’s, and Charlie, the baby girl of the family in Palm Springs to deal with Amy’s mother and father. Once they find out there are no flights until after Christmas, Amy and Teddy start out on a cross-country adventure to try to make Palm Springs before Christmas. Oh, the pain of getting kicked off the bus, broken down junk cars, and being abducted by members of the Alien Abduction Survivors Network. Everything goes wrong, of course, and that’s only the beginning. It’s going to get a lot worse.

This is a Disney Channel show for those who are not familiar with Good Luck Charlie. Charlie (Charlotte) is the baby of the family and Teddy is recording a video diary of advice for growing up for Charlie. This is a special Christmas movie based on the series. It’s a pretty cute little show, and this is true Disney Channel family fun. The jokes are pretty good, and there is a lot of gags that are really funny. Basically it’s a pretty good film. This is appearing on the Disney Channel this season, and is especially good for the target demographic, kids who are fans of the Disney Channel in the first place. But the whole family can probably enjoy this show, and it’s a decent one for the whole family to watch together.

Good Luck Charlie!

Disney Channel original movie

Hallee Hirsh, Brenda Song, Spencer Breslin, Hallie Todd, John Salley, Susan Ruttan, John B Lowe, Peter Scolari

Allie (Hallee Hirsh) and Samantha (Brenda Song) are best friends. While walking in the woods they come across a little cabin with a white bearded man who is angry because his machine doesn’t work, and he throws it into the trash, just as the girls pass. They pick it up and carry it home, and find out it’s a weather changing device. As they play with it, it sets off a terrible snow storm (in Los Angeles) that will simply not quit. The girls are thrilled because they get a “snow day” for the first time in history, but when the snow starts messing up everything else, including trapping Allie’s Dad at the airport coming home from a business trip, it looks like he won’t come home for Christmas. Well, it turns out Santa uses the cabin as a summer getaway and the weather machine is his. Two elves arrive to help Santa find it, while a local weatherman sees finding the device as a way to boost his stock and keep him his job.

This is a Disney Channel Original film from 2000. It is probably not bad for the pre-teen, early teen crowd, especially girls, but truly there wasn’t much too this story that wasn’t silly. I saw it on the ABC Family channel as part of their “25 Days of Christmas” specials they run every December. I found it, not only silly, but kind of boring at the same time. There isn’t much going on here, and there a dozens of better Christmas stories for the younger kids. I vote to pass on this one.

Hop, Skip and Jump Productions, Princessa Productions, Von Zerneck Sertner Films

Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Amy Smart, Richard Fitzpatrick, Benjamin Ayres, Jennifer Kydd, Joe MacLeod, Joe Ring

Kate Stanton (Amy Smart) is setup for a blind date Mark-Paul Gosselaar), but Kate is obsessed with getting her old boyfriend back. She bails right at the start of the date when her boyfriend calls. She makes a total mess of the day when she finds out her ex is about to propose to his new found love. At the end of the day when she falls asleep. She wakes up on her back at the perfume counter where she just was spritzed and passed out. She is “shocked” to find out that it’s not Christmas Day, but Christmas Eve all over again. She goes out on the blind date again, and screws it up one more time. As time after time things go wrong, she finally finds out how to do it right and figures out what she’s supposed to do.

If this sounds like Groundhog day, it is. And a number of other Christmas films that have had the same plot for the most part, “Christmas Every Day, Christmas Do-Over, 12 Days of Christmas Eve” for example. So it’s not a new concept, that’s for sure. But it is a cute and simple concept, and has a lot of heart and chemistry. Elizabeth Smart and Mark-Paul Gosselaar work very well together. It’s warm and funny, and easy to watch. It’s certainly not a great film, and it’s really derivative, but I was surprised that I didn’t hate it. It was actually one that kept me interested throughout and I did not get tired of it. It’s nice to have something new to watch for this year rather than repeating one of the old ones. Very much like a remake, it has enough uniqueness to keep it going.

I was not able to locate a preview of this film yet, as it is very new, but I did find an interesting clip of Amy Smart being interviewed about the role.

Shavick Entertainment, Insight Film Studios, Regent Entertainment

Dina Meyer, David Sutcliffe, April Telek, Kyle Cassie, Alistair Abell, Paula Devicq, Alexia Fast, Scott Swanson, Tony Alcantar

Tom Lane (David Sutcliffe) is a writer of a column for a big newspaper. The company is thinking of producing a new TV show featuring him. Liz Madison (Dina Meyer) is writing an advice column for a small paper. When the big paper suddenly buys the small paper to close it down and absorb it into the big company, Liz changes the focus of her column teaching people the real meaning of Christmas. As her popularity rises, the owner is faced with a choice. If he saves the paper, he will cancel the new TV show. Or he can produce the TV show and cancel the paper. This puts Tom and Liz on a direct path of conflict.

This is a pretty decent holiday tale set in the Bay area of San Francisco. Basically the conflict is between a smug and arrogant big newspaper guy and a small town lady who knows the value of home and community and Christmas. Each has a lot to learn, and the story, though very simple, is nice to watch unfold. The characters are believable and the Marin County scenery is breathtaking. It seems that they both bring out the worst in each other, and the conflicts seem sincere. These two could really hate each other. Naturally, being a Christmas story, they have to manage to find common ground.

Just a simple story of boy meets girl built around the newspaper industry. Nothing outstanding here, but a good solid story of the holiday spirit.
