CBS Films, Gidden Media, Good Universe,

Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Michael Douglas, Kevin Kline, Mary Steenburgen, Jerry Ferrara, Roger Bart, Weronika Rosati, Romany Malco, Jena Sims, Autumn Dial, Bre Blair

Billy (Michael Douglas), Paddy (Robert De Niro), Archie (Morgan Freeman) and Sam (Kevin Kline) have been best friends since childhood. Billy has been a bachelor all his life, but now is about to marry a woman half his age, so he puts the group back together to head to Las Vegas for the wedding. But while they’re there, they figured it was only right to throw Billy an epic bachelor party. But the guys are older now, and even with the infatuation with a lounge singer (Mary Steenburgen) trying to settle them down, they do their best to rip up the town. But old hurts, and Billy’s secret that he’s been holding all these years are about to do in the whole gang.

This is a really funny buddy movie. This is the senior citizen version of The Hangover, much to my delight. These guys are really funny, and the script is so rich with back stories and side tracks that it’s always interesting and really funny. These guys do their best to have a good time, and watching them try so hard is really funny. This also reminds me a bit of National Lampoons Vegas Vacation because there’s some really funny misunderstandings and side treks on the journey to the wedding day. All in all the brilliant comedic actors each play their part to bring it all together for one of my favorite ensemble casts of all times. This is a really funny trip to Vegas for the silver haired gang, and one you ought not miss now that it’s available on DVD.

Dickhouse Productions, MTV Films,

Johnny Knoxville, Jackson Nicoll, Spike Jonze, Catherine Keener, Georgina Cates

Irving Zisman’s (Johnny Knoxville) wife passes away suddenly, and Grandpa wants to take her home to be buried (or perhaps gotten rid of is a better term), so he sets off on a road trip with the body in the trunk and with his grandson, Billy (Jackson Nicoll) to do the deed. With hidden cameras and the obligatory innocent bystanders for comic fodder, this journey is a series of encounters that are hilarious.

One of the best and worst things about the Jackass films are the same thing. There’s no cohesiveness to the story. They are just a series of pranks, pratfalls, dirty tricks, and daredevil stunts thrown together. Bad Grandpa takes one of the funniest characters of Jackass fame, Johnny Knoxville in his old man costume, Irving. Irving is a jerk, and innocent bystanders be damned, he’s going through the country like a bull in a china shop. Poor Billy takes most of the damage from the series of pranks much like Wee Man in Jackass. But this movie is more than another Jackass movie, as the story starts at the beginning and is one cohesive road trip film from start to end. Imagine Jackass with a storyline! That’s what is good about this movie. Missing are the other misfits from the Jackass series, but that’s probably good because they are getting so well known that it’s hard to get them into the bits without being recognized. But no one knows it’s Johnny in his old man makeup, and he pulls it off splendidly. Like other good Jackass pranks, it makes us uncomfortable from time to time, and I don’t know how child protective services doesn’t arrest these guys for what they made Jackson Nicoll do. After seeing him as a guest on MTV’s Rediculousness, I’m sure he can handle it, but it’s pretty gross for a youngster. (That is unless the joke is on me, and Billy is actually Wee Man in a child suit.) Ok, no way, but it’s a thought. Anyway, I found this movie to be a lot better done than I expected, and now I understand the money it made at the box office. It’s a decent movie after all, and now that it’s out on DVD, it’s worth watching if you’re a fan of the off kilter absurd humor that they bring. It’s an acquired taste, but I found myself laughing out loud a number of times. I have to admit I enjoyed it.

Columbia Pictures, Sony Pictures Animation, Sony Pictures Imageworks,

Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan, Andy Samberg, Benjamin Bratt, Neil Patrick Harris, Terry Crews, Kristen Schaal

Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader) has saved the world from his horrible food making machine, and is working in a new job, when he finds that his machine is still running and kicking out mutant foods that are terrorizing people. Flint determines that he has to step in and stop it, so he gathers together his crew and sets out to once again save the world.

Sometimes a film doesn’t need a sequel. This one doesn’t. The original film was very clever and unusual. It caught us all off guard, and was very entertaining due to the quirkiness of the story. Every once in a while an off the wall (out of the box) idea comes along and is very refreshing. Then they come along and decide to continue the story with a sequel that doesn’t add anything to the original except for a ton of new puns on food names. Did George Takei write the script?

Some years ago when the Titanic came out, we made jokes about giving away the fact that the ship sank at the end. But when the movie made a gazillion dollars, we quipped about how James Cameron could make a sequel to the story. Someone came up with an idea that Rose arrives in Santa Monica, still grieving her lost Jack who drowned in the icy water when visiting the country club sees a young handsome Jack playing tennis and about has a stroke. But it turns out Jack has an identical twin, and the meet and fall in love in Titanic 2. That way you could bring Leo DiCaprio back too! Another billion dollar film. Of course they had the good sense not to make it. Unfortunately for us, they decided to make this sequel. Nothing is new this time, and it’s no longer quirky, but just weird. Now Andy Samberg can churn out some pretty clever 3 minute short films for TV FunHouse on SNL, but to try to pull that kind of humor for a feature length film is just too much. It’s not near as funny the second time around, and most of the creatures were invented to just tack on funny names. The jokes tend to hang out there, and try as I might, I could not stay interested in this movie. I got bored a number of times and realized I was daydreaming and had to jump back a few minutes to find out what I had missed. The answer to that is, “Not much”. There are some fans of this film, and to them I am glad you liked it, but it just didn’t work for me this time around. This is a good time waster for little kids who will get a kick of the hybrid monster food dishes, but for for anyone over 10 years old, unless you are really a fan of the first, be prepared to lose interest in this sequel that just doesn’t quite cut it.

Blumhouse Productions, IM Global Octane, Reliance,

Emily Browning, Xavier Samuel, Cam Gigandet, Dawn Olivieri, Thomas Dekker, Frances Fisher, Elizabeth Peña, Brandon Jay McLaren

Hayley is a singer and a songwriter and a wife and mother. But she just lost her brother and collaborator and is grieving, when suddenly she meets a talented guitarist who wants to help her get back on track in her career. But he’s obsessed with her and she soon finds out he wants much more than to just make music with her. This creepy suspense will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Emily Browning does a pretty good job as Haley, the girl who is something to everybody. She does a good job of displaying the frustration of everybody wanting something from her. When she finally finds someone to help her through it, it turns around and he’s the one demanding the most from her. The story is very suspenseful, and has you on the edge of your seat. The best part is perhaps the story itself. The screenplay is a good one. There is a pretty decent rock score as well. This is sort of like Fatal Attraction is some ways but the twists and turns in the end as we find out what really happened turns everything around and suddenly it all makes sense. I was pleasantly surprised with this movie, and it’s a decent suspenseful erotic thriller with a rock and roll bend.
