Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures, Tea Shop & Film Company, Dimension Films,

Claire Holt, Mandy Moore, Chris J. Johnson, Yani Gellman, Santiago Segura, Matthew Modine

Lisa (Mandy Moore) is healing from a hurtful breakup, so she and her sister Kate (Claire Holt) head out on a vacation to Mexico. While there, some guys they met ask them to take a boat trip out on the ocean to go down in an cage a short distance under the water to view the sharks. They set out on the adventure, but a failure of the system causes their cage to plunge 47 Meters down to the floor of the ocean, where they’re stranded with only a little oxygen, no way to easily get back up and constantly being circled by hungry sharks. The must use all their wits to try to survive this.

This new 2017 film was rather nicely done. It was wonderful to see Mandy Moore again, and she’s great as the lead in this film. I’m sure it will make just a little dent in the box office with all the other blockbusters out there, but it’s actually a rather nice change of pace. It’s really terrifying, and the soundtrack and the jump scares are pretty well done. If you watch this in the theater with a good sound system, it’s bound to make you jump several times. The suspense is good, and it’s really entertaining and suspenseful. But it is reminiscent of many other disaster movies, and it pulls all the normal cliche’s out and uses them all. It was a really nice change of pace, and a good experience, but I can’t rate this as an excellent film, as it’s not a big movie after all. But if you’re getting tired of all the superheroes, this is something different and was much better done than I expected. I enjoyed it.

Unified Pictures, Media House Capital, A Single Shot Productions,

Sam Rockwell, William H. Macy, Ted Levine, Kelly Reilly, Jason Isaacs, Joe Anderson, Jeffrey Wright, Ophelia Lovibond, Amy Sloan, W. Earl Brown

John Moon (Sam Rockwell) is a hunter, though convicted a few times of poaching, he seems fearless as he hunts down game illegally. But a mistaken shot finds a beautiful young woman dead. John panics and decides to hide the body, but in the process finds a great deal of money hidden in a cave where he tries to hide the money. John has an estranged wife and daughter who quickly become the target of the bad backwoods criminals that find out that John has their money. Things just getting worse as John tries his best to resolve it without anyone more dying.

This is an unusual story. The backwoods West Virginia dialect is a little tough to follow, but it does feel very realistic. With a simple single storyline, you’d think this would get boring, but it never seems to. The story of one bad decision which leads to a landslide of events is actually quite interesting. This is another film that has been in my queue for ages, but has finally floated to the top of my queue. As intriguing as the story is by itself, I must say that Sam Rockwell’s performance is pretty good. He played the loner guy really well. William H Macy has a smaller role as the small town lawyer, but he never disappoints in bringing the role to life. There is a lot of intrigue and suspense and it was a nice surprise to pop this DVD in the player this afternoon. Not a well known movie at all, but certainly worth watching. I enjoyed this.

Fox Searchlight Pictures, Likely Story,

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, James Gandolfini, Catherine Keener, Toni Collette, Ben Falcone, Tavi Gevinson, Tracey Fairaway, Eve Hewson, Anjelah Johnson

Eva (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is a divorced single Mom whose Daughter’s best friend is much closer to her than her own daughter. Eva is a masseuse and at a party with one of her clients, Marianne (Catherine Keener) she meets a friendly divorced man, Albert (James Gandofini) who also has a daughter soon heading to college, and they hit it off. But when she finds out that Albert is none other than Marianne’s hated ex-husband, things get complicated as she can’t seem to confess to either one and as you would expect, trouble is on the way.

This romantic comedy from 2013 has been in my queue for ages and ages. This is one of the usual rom/coms that feature mismatched couples trying to make the best of a terrible situation. It’s quite predictable, yet it’s really entertaining with a great group of familiar actors. Besides Dreyfus, Gandolfini, and Keener, we also have Toni Collette, Ben Falcone, and more, and so it’s filled with talent. Although about 4 years old already, it’s very current and a lot of fun. This is a simple comedy with lots of light moments, mixed with some very touching and moving moments as the problems pile up. It’s a complex relationship film, and very well done, and worth giving it a shot.

Los Angeles Media Fund (LAMF), STX Entertainment, Southpaw Entertainment (I),

Gary Oldman, Asa Butterfield, Carla Gugino, Britt Robertson

Gardner Elliot (Asa Butterfield) was the first human born on Mars, and his birth and very existence has been kept secret by Nathaniel Shepherd (Gary Oldman) as the head of the corporation that put together the first manned mission to Mars. But Gardner has grown up and is mostly unaware of what life was like on Earth. He’s able to make contact with a young foster girl who is estranged from any contact with her classmates who enjoys talking to him. Tulsa (Britt Robertson) has no knowledge that the guy she is chatting online with is on Mars, and it’s a surprise when he suddenly shows up asking for her help to find his biological father. But Gardner has never experienced Earth’s gravity which puts his body in grave danger.

The previews of this film looked pretty good, and I expected to watch this movie, but it didn’, t last long in the theaters. The problem I suspect is that the story is rather shallow, and rather than a stunning science fiction film, this turned out to be a sweet adolescent coming of age – falling in love movie and is pretty good in that genre, but probably not what folks expected and that, and stiff competition blew it out of the theaters in record time. But is was a pretty good movie for what it tackled. The science is shaky, and there’s no great suspense. It is a lovely little romance though, and should have a great deal of appeal to the young ladies just like the fairy tales and romance stories from the past. Very warm and comforting, and if you don’t go into this looking for a super Sci-Fi adventure, you won’t be disappointed.
